The Washington Capitals are showing strong interest in extending defenseman Jakob Chychrun’s contract, especially as the salary cap is projected to rise over the next three seasons. With significant increases expected—starting with a $7.5 million bump next year and reaching up to a $9.5 million increase by the 2027-28 season—team management is optimistic about their ability to negotiate a new deal. Chychrun, who has played impressively this season with 33 points and a +20 plus/minus rating, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He expressed excitement about his role with the team and hopes for swift contract negotiations. In a separate trade move, the Calgary Flames acquired Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee from the Philadelphia Flyers, sending a package that includes Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier in return, along with draft picks. Flames GM Craig Conroy commented on the trade’s quick development, indicating it evolved from initial one-for-one discussions. While Frost shows potential as a restricted free agent, Farabee’s production has dipped. Meanwhile, the Canucks made headlines by trading JT Miller to the New York Rangers, who aimed to improve their team dynamic amid reports of locker room tensions. In return, the Canucks received young talents Filip Chytil and Victori Mancini, along with a protected first-round draft pick.

There is no doubt that JT Miller is the best player in the trade however I think the Canucks did well to get a probable top 6 forward, a defense prospect, a first round pick and didn’t have to eat any salary. They have some flexibility with Cap space to fill a need.
Dan, do you think Caps beat Jets Saturday evening? Feels like they might be sluggish after long road trip. Possible letdown game. Jets 5-0 last 5. Go Caps!
What do you think reasonable expectations are for this great of a regular season? If we win a round I say it’s a win! Second round defeat used to sting so bad but having no advancement since 2018 really hurts…
A lot of interesting stuff going on. I would like to see Columbus get one of the card spots. I like Torts as a coach for Philly. I like Carolina's moves. They have a nasty habit of over achieving in the playoffs or something like that. However, all this plus other teams' moves don't necessarily mean the Caps need to make any major move. We do need to get a deal with Chychrun done.
In terms of 2025 draft picks we have:
-Our first
-Our second plus Boston's second
-Carolina's third
-Our fourth
-Our fifth
-No sixth or seventh
This is not bad considering moves we made and where we are.
LETS GO CAPS!!
I’ve heard zero negatives about the Thompson deal, can’t even recall anything other than it being considered a team friendly deal.
Where are you seeing this criticized?
