Brodie Brazil analyzes the Sharks trade with the Dallas Stars on February 1, 2025, and provides key insights from GM Mike Grier’s media availability, where he addresses the details of the trade.
It is difficult to see Granlund move on as he was really one of the more positive acquisitions by Mike Grier. Ceci I thought was useful and steady but too slow in getting pucks out of defensive end. I always hope that Sharks get their high draft pick and then after the playoffs are over, the traded player returns to the team as UFA and then get him back again. This trade will keep Sharks closer to bottom in the league standings and perhaps get them another #1 overall pick, so it is painful to see a fan favourite player leave but we understand the gamble that MIke Grier is taking for the future. Most teams won't trade their first round picks in the draft, and given Dallas's great draft record in recent years, this trade suggests they are going all in for this season and think they are a contender for the Stanley Cup and needed added depth.
I don't see the logic of moving away good younger pieces or a rare reliable goalie. We'll stay rebuilding longer like this when we give these players up.
Brodie, in a rebuild, it would be great to have prospects profiled when they have big games…think Sam Dickinson when he put in 1 goal and 5 assists in one game earlier this season. Or even Askarov when he was goaltender of the month in the AHL. Gives us something to be pumped about when we're trading away leading scorers and starters for futures. Just a suggestion.
Sharks seem to be collecting good young players and draft picks. I can’t help but wonder if it’s too much youth with no real veterans to develop the young players.
Will miss Granlund a lot, as well as Will will miss Granny! Supporting Stars now to win the cup, and hoping that Granny will be back as FA, $7M for 3 years we can offer for sure
Rebuilding. If the team had already won the Stanley Cup, that's fine. Should fans wait another 30+ yrs? Sux that they're filling up the roster with rookies.

hear me out brody….. even if we sign ehlers at 13 and raantanen/marner at 13 we still have 19 mil in cap space
THANK YOU Brodie for at least trying to put some pressure on that dirt bag owner that previously fired you…
Nemec incoming
Seems like too much for an end of round 1 pick. Are the Sharks tanking? Is this good for their younger players?

The Rebuilding will continue into oblivion.

absolute banger of a trade! Neither were coming back. Real team doesnt start till Vlasic is off the books.

Well, hopefully the Sharks actually offer sheet an RFA that’s a good fit to the Sharks
