Breaking down the Calgary Flames’ blockbuster trade with the Philadelphia Flyers

On Thursday night, as the Calgary Flames were playing the Anaheim Ducks, they were also completing a major trade. The Flames sent Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, a 2025 second-round pick and a 2028 seventh-round pick to Philadelphia in exchange for Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee.

Ryan provides his analysis on why the trade makes sense for the Flames and where they go from here.

  1. Four picks in the first three rounds doesn't seem like enough for a team without game breaking talent.

I'll say I dislike the trade. Not for the assets in or out, but because I'm not sure this trade does anything to break the Flames out of the mushy middle. This trade doesn't really move the needle, but it's signaling yet again the Flames aren't willing to sell and bottom out.

  2. It seems to me that the trade could make Calgary better this year. Perhaps going forward. But I do give a nod to the sentiment "does this help in the long term? Does this significantly improve Calgary's chances to have a team that can consistently compete in the west and for a Stanley Cup?" Not convinced of that right now

  3. Flames win big time….wow….Flyers GM is just dreadful……he just got fleeced…..how he still has a job is beyond me…way out of his league….wow.
