  1. The canes will have the cap space to resign Rantanan unlike last year where they couldn’t afford Guentzel

  2. Dont talk about brent burns and how hes one of our top blue line players. He is very sloppy and makes at least five bad turnovers a game that lead to grade A chances for the other team.

  3. Hey, just as a canes fan, i appreciate the video. I always felt like they were always in the background, and this trade made them up and center. Very well made video. LETS GO CANES

  4. I agree—cup or bust. If they keep trading away their assets and get only a rental player in return, the cupboards will soon be bare.
    Another great well-researched video Jimmy.

  5. Canes have $30M in cap space afaik after this season, it's perfectly possible Canes will be willing to sign a big money deal for Rantanen

  6. The canes can get to the finals, they just need to get through the Caps. If they were in the west, i doubt it. Getting through Edmonton, Dallas, Vegas, The Wild and LA depending on how they're playing… unlikely. So they are a cup team, but I doubt they're a championship team. As an Avs fan that watches every game, Rantanen is amazing but is not the franchise superstar people are saying he is.

  7. As a long canes fan, goaltending has been the issue for a long time. But as long as both Andersen and Kotchekov are healthy and do their job. We could have a chance at winning it this year. Especially having Rantannan on our team and a great defense and an outstanding special team. LGC

  8. I think it ultimately comes down to if Mikko fits in and enjoys his time here. If he clicks with the team/Rod, enjoys being the big guy in town not behind Nate dog, and finds success in his game, I don’t see why he wouldn’t want to stay.

Eric Tulsky is not Don Waddell and will absolutely sign him to a large contract. Tulsky has even said they learned from the Guentzel situation and want to sign him but are giving him time to adjust and see how he feels.

  9. From Rantanen’s pov, not that many teams like the canes who have a lot of cap space with great players already locked in to contracts. As well as a consistent team competing every year

  10. two things determine how serious this team is when the playoffs come:
    powerplay
    consistent goaltending
both of these are what have costed us the last few years, especially last year which was probably the best team in franchise history top to bottom, blowing a 3-1 lead in minutes to a rival when we had all the momentum and a reverse sweep seemed like it was about to come true

  11. I don't think it's cup or bust, this was supposed to be an off year and a year to really get players situated with all the moves in the off season. The canes are playing above what is expected, and the trade made should only help them even more.

  12. The Colorado Avalanche are my first & favorite team, the Hurricanes are my 2nd team because they’re in the East. Both teams started building out their defenses around the same time. I will say, Colorado’s higher end talent on defense carries them a bit further than Carolina’s and I think Colorado’s defense is better than Carolina. That said, defensively, not just offensively, I think Carolina is absolutely best in the NHL and it’s a no contest. But in the modern, while defense is important, a defense that can produce can help mitigate production from forwards and while Brent Burns is still playing decently, the Hurricanes defense is much better at preventing goals than creating them. Shayne Gostisbehere is a monster and fits super well just like he did a couple of trade deadlines ago. They could probably use a more productive defensemen, and then they’d absolutely wear the crown of best defense in the NHL, over Colorado.

  13. The canes were good before Rantanen. Hall is extremely talented too. This is not a win now or bust. Svech, Jarvis, Ago, and Slavin are a great core signed long term.

  14. I never thought I’d consider calling someone ā€œa well above average coachā€ insulting. Brindamours literally had the best start to a career by a coach in the history of the league. Fastest to 300 wins, he’ll probably be fastest to 400 and 500 too the way they’ve got this roster built.

  15. I'm a Canes fan. This year we've been playing with house money really. We lost a lot of our main guys last summer and have exceeded expectations to the point that we're cup contenders despite playing with a lot of newer players and a few rookies, with more rookies coming next year

  16. This is a retool year. Why tf are people all of a sudden saying cup or bust? We have Brent burns playing top minutes, and don’t have a legitimate goalie. The rantanen trade was tulsky taking a swing for a top fa because we have an insane amount of cap space. Even if we sign mikko to his $14mil a year deal we will still have plenty of cap, and not to mention Nikishin in the roster and many other prospects likely coming up. I saw our true ā€˜contention window’ starts next year

  17. Next season we have Burns, Orlov, Roslovic, Hall, Anderson off the books. Projected 38.7mil cap space for signing players. Likely ~13.5 for Rantanen (that would requires an offer of 15.4 aav for any team to match), bring Alexander Nikishin to America, find a bottom six forward and third pair defensemen that fit the team, or bring in some of the great prospects! That leaves ~21.2 for a good goaltender (Hill?) and a top six forward or two (ex: Gourde, Olofsson, offer sheet Kakko).

In summation, the Canes will probably look better next season than they do now.
