One big factor not mentioned…. The Hershey Bears have won the Calder cup 3 seasons in a row. Caps have drafted better. And keep them.

It's a good time to be a Caps fan now, huge props to the front office. McPhee was a fine GM, but BMac has done an outstanding job and it's paying dividends now. Being better than the penguins is icing on the cake too
The Jets have literally been the top of the league ALL SEASON! Capitals have been here for 3 weeks tops. cool down the bandwagon a bit! They are doing amazing, no doubt… but the ONLY CONSISTENTLY #1 team ALL SEASON IS WPG! full stop. that makes them the best overall. period. no contest.

Washington gels like no other team on a regular basis, with great goaltending. The balance of players, team chemistry is a Huge factor.
That title alone has Jets fans fuming

Great drafting, great trades, great signings.
"What a GIFFFF-TUH". I loved listening to Adam and Steve fawn over Ovi and Crosby for giving us 20 years of stellar hockey and legendary moments.
The key is the Caps drafting team has isolated what weaknesses in a prospect they think they can develop out of them. This lets them swing hard on high ceiling low floor players with late 1sts and lower round picks with higher results.
– Cristall: incredible vision and playmaking and hands , bad skating and small. Selected in the 2nd
– Cole Hutson: incredible skating and vision and hands, bad defense and small. picked in the 2nd
– Terik Parascak: incredible vision and playmaking, bad skating. Mid 1st rounder
– Aliaksei Protas at his draft: large player, good hands, bad skating and avoided physicality. 3rd round
– Ilya Protas: large, good hands and playmaking, bad skating. 3rd round
-Ivan Miroshnichenko: great shot, high drive, physical. Cancer meant his development was delayed so he fell. Late 1st.
-Eriks Mateiko: large, good shot, good playmaking, bad skating. 3rd round pick.
Additionally they've developed a ton of while not high end NHLers or even every day NHLers, they produce depth guys via Hershey that are able to fill in the lineup or be traded for assets. They drafted Beck Malenstyn in the 5th round and turned him into the pick for Cole Hutson for example. They lost Jonas Siegenthaler to the Laviolette era but they also picked him. Brett Leason was a pick of theirs too (lost to waivers).
Full disclaimer, Caps fan. Speaking objectively, the second pens cup would likely be more impressive in that hypothetical, but only by a nanometer. Also, as a caps fan, STOP GIVING ME HOPE! I'm very happy with how the team is performing, we've already got a cup, I want to still be a happy caps fan even if they lose in the playoffs. My younger self would agonize over it for MONTHS whenever we had an early exit. Now in the years since the cup, when we've been eliminated it's been a much easier pill to swallow. "Oh well, we've gotten one, it's okay if we don't do great. Give them the benefit of the doubt, they're already thinking about how to handle the post-Ovi era and I should do the same." I don't want to go back to being the inconsolable rage monster I used to be.

The Capitals are in the top of the Metropolitan Division and the second best record in the NHL. Plus Ovi quest to break Gretzky’s record is a once in a generation opportunity to witness to see it happen.
The Commanders have scored from a record 4-13 in last season to a 12-5 record in 2024 with rookie quarterback with new ownership, new GM and a brand new coaching staff. First time they scored over 10 wins since 1991 & won a playoff game since 2005 & went to the NFC Championship game.
The Nationals surprisingly got the number one pick in 2025 MLB draft & have an opportunity to drafted Ethan Holliday to join along with Dylan Crews, James Wood, CJ Abrams & Brady House.
The Wizards are in the middle of their tanking to trying to get number one pick in order to draft Cooper Flagg.
