Okay, I’m not sure if it’s a topic that people find the most value in, but it’s certainly one that has been discussed. Therefore, it’s one that I feel is necessary to explore on the channel at least once.

The Ottawa Senators are a lucky team. They have themselves two top 5 draft picks at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and a guaranteed chance to drafting two absolutely game-changing talents. But with that said, the fact that they have two picks begs the question, could they end up trading both of their picks, either for a player who is already-established, or even trading both picks for the 1st overall pick, to select Alexis Lafreniere?

Elliotte Friedman’s 31 Thoughts: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/31-thoughts-fallout-contentious-nhl-draft-lottery/

The current NHL rankings for the 2020 NHL Draft go as follows:

1st) Undetermined team
2nd) Los Angeles Kings
3rd) Ottawa Senators (via San Jose Sharks)
4th) Detroit Red Wings
5th) Ottawa Senators
6th) Anaheim Ducks
7th) New Jersey Devils
8th) Buffalo Sabres.

The draft is stacked with guys like Alexis Lafrenière at the top, with Quinton Byfield, Tim Stützle, Lucas Raymond, Alexander Holtz, Jamie Drysdale, Marco Rossi, Cole Perfetti, Jake Sanderson, and Yaroslav Askarov rounding out the top 10. The rest of the draft has a ton of great talent as well, like Anton Lundell, Kaiden Guhle, Dawson Mercer, Braden Schneider, Dylan Holloway, Hendrix Lapierre, Connor Zary, Justin Barron, Jack Quinn, John-Jason Peterka, William Wallinder, Rodion Amirov, Jacob Perreault, Seth Jarvis, Ty Smilanic, Jeremie Poirer, Noel Gunler, Mavrik Bourque, Lukas Reichel, Tyler Kleven, Ridly Greig, Justin Sourdif, Shakir Mukhamadullin, Jake Neighbours, Luke Tuch, Helge Grans, Jan Mysak, Michael Benning, and Antonio Stranges.

The former NHL Draft Lottery odds, went in order as the Detroit Red Wings, Ottawa Senators, San Jose Sharks (Senators), Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes (Devils), Minnesota Wild, Winnipeg Jets, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Columbus Blue Jackets, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks (Devils), Nashville Predators, Toronto Maple Leafs (Hurricanes), Edmonton Oilers, New York Islanders (Senators), Dallas Stars, Carolina Hurricanes (Rangers), Pittsburgh Penguins (Wild), Philadelphia Flyers, Tampa Bay Lightning (Sharks), Colorado Avalanche, Vegas Golden Knights, Washington Capitals, St. Louis Blues, and Boston Bruins (Ducks).

  1. In my opinion as a Sens fan, we should trade up for 1 because we already have a really deep prospect pool and I feel like we couldnt afford 2 fantastic players, we also dont neccesarily need 2 players, in the long run we seem to be good for a while, I wanna hear your opinions so let's discuss 😁

  2. Most people know it's a stupid trade. But what terrifies me is you never know with Dorion, he might which would be a horrible trade of 3 and 5 for 1.

  3. Lol everyone in here "not happening". You have absolutely no idea what is going to happen draft day. Might not be both picks. But maybe one of the picks are traded for more first rounders or established players etc. The point is, you can't predict the future.

  4. Ottawa would never do it. Lafreniere is no Crosby/McDavid and is only a winger, and a LW to boot where they already got Tkatchuk. They need elite centers BADLY and then maybe a winger after that. Stutzle or Byfeild could legit become better than Lafreniere in 4 years time in the NHL. Difference between these players talent level and present value is not a Marco Rossi or Jamie Drysdale etc. Trading down either makes no sense as they are STACKED with assets in this draft…THREE 1st round picks, FOUR 2nd round picks, THREE 3rd round picks and 14 picks in total in 2020 draft. Moving down from slot 3 and 5 to grap true impact players or possible superstar young players to build around in a draft like this makes no sense especially with so many early draft assets. I could possibly see them trade up that Islanders pick from the teens into top 10 using some of their 2nd round draft capital.

  5. hey man. been following you for a while but the 2020 draft was the first time i saw your actual appearance. i dont understand why you are not on camera more often as your enthusiastic reaction was so honest. you should market yourself a bit more as familiarity would most possibly boost popularity for your channel. that being said really think this free agent period will be very different from anything we have seen in the past. a few more RFA offers and definitely a lot more positioning during the draft. this will be fun to watch. think ottawa would be best off drafting in their allocated spots and then trading with desparate teams looking to shed salary. they could rebuild their team into a contender within a year or two. personally i think it would be smart for ottawa to take the highest ranking goalie with their second pick.

  6. Ottawa should keep their picks and go best player available. They will be much happier in 3 to 5 years when both of these players are wrecking havoc on the league and playing on the same line.

  7. I believe whoever they draft at #3 and #5 will bring more value to the team then Lafreniere will alone. The draft is the first thing sens fans have had to look forward to for a little while, and the sens still might screw this up. Just take Byfield or Stutzle at #3, and either Raymond, Drysdale, Rossi, or Holtz at #5. There’s plenty of great prospects to pick from for a team that’s rebuilding, no need to trade up, and no need to trade down to get other assets. I hope they just use their #3 and #5 pick, the players they get will change the franchise down the road

  8. I addressed this in a previous video but I feel its more appropriate here in this discussion. I mentioned discussed Detroit trading 4th overall pick + Mantha for Ottawa's 3rd overall + 5th overall (though there would likely need to be some balancing / sweeteners). Prospects don't always turn out and in many ways, you hope a prospect reaches the level Mantha is at. No prospect is a sure thing and Ottawa knows that as well as anyone after drafting Alexander Daigle 1st overall in 1993 with him becoming a huge bust. Although the trade might need a bit of tweaking, my logic is that with this trade Ottawa gets a player who is proven and seemingly getting better (assuming he can stay healthy) with RFA status giving the team negotiating leverage, and a the 4th pick which will get the one of Drysdale, Rossi or Stuzle (though I imagine Detroit would be trading up to get him), Mantha gets to play in Ottawa which right next to his native Quebec and could take a hometown discount, and Detroit turns a single high pick into two getting themselves likely Stuzle and either Rossi or Drysdale (Mantha would likely be on the upper age echelon of the team by the time the coming prospects develop anyway so another prospect in the same age group might be a good idea). For those who question if Mantha is worth a top 5 pick, I am linking an article here which talks about top 10 picks traded since 2005. It seems like picks 7 and 8 were traded in packages for players such as Stepan, Carter and Staal (Jordan). I would argue that that Stepan and Staal don't have the same first line potential as Mantha. And in those trades, the additional sweeteners came from the team trading the 1st round. The link to the article is here: https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/often-top-10-nhl-draft-picks-traded-june/ And while many feel that Ottawa should try and keep 2 potential franchise players, they would still get the 4th pick which would give them that chance at one potential franchise player, as well as a proven established top line player with a lot of upside and who is getting better in Mantha. Teams like Edmonton and Buffalo are examples where drafting high doesn't always work and sometimes it might be worth trading some of your high picks for established players to build around your core. Now you can all call me crazy or say it will never happen but the discussion will be more fun if you provide counter arguments and discuss "WHY", and possibly what you would value Mantha's worth 🙂

  9. I think it's quite possible that Ott trades down to 4 with Det if Stutzle is still available I imagine it would be 3rd for 4th and a middle-high prospect… not too sure what Dets prospect pool is so I can't really throw out a name. I know Dorion has 3 guys topping the draft… but I imagine that there probably isn't a massive drop off between 3rd and 4th overall (despite what analysts will have us believe) and receiving another future NHL caliber (albeit 3rd liner) could prove to help the rebuild fast than a Stutzle/Byfield

  10. The Sens have a generally good drafting record and so they would likely back themselves to draft better with two 1st round picks rather than just getting the single pick, especially if all the picks are within a spot or two of each other. For the Sens to even consider it, they would have made the evaluation that Lafreniere is massively better the other top 5 picks. Not sure they are certain about that.

  11. I wouldn't give up picks 3 and 5 for #1. I don't even think that the team picking #1 would give that pick up either.

  12. I think they should trade one of the picks down. Maybe call the devils. And make a package that includes the two firsts they have for 5 and include some other to balance it out

  13. 3 and 5 for Lafrenière seems right. They get a french speaking star to fill the arena and the other team gets to have 2 top-5 picks. It's about right to me.

  14. If the Canucks happen to win, would it be feasible to trade the 1st and Pettersson for the 3rd and 5th overall selections?

  15. I would prefer we stay at 3 and 5 but I wouldn't be mad if we can get 1 although I don't think it's necessary. We have quantity in our system we have probably one of the deepest prospects pool in the league. Therefore the task is to draft the best prospect we can draft.

  16. A team isn’t trading that #1 pick. No team would have done that under regular circumstances, let alone when they absolutely lucked out to get it with a lottery draft win from such a low position. For the team that gets it, it’s going to seem like they were gifted Lafreniere from heaven! So… you’re going to tell me that they are then going to say to their fan base “Nah, don’t really want him” and then trade that pick??? Think real hard about that entire proposition. 🤔

  17. If a team like the Penguins, Lightning,Blues or Bruins…maybe you trade # 1 and whatever for #3 and #5.
    If I'm Ottawa, i would offer #3, the Islanders 1st and 2021 1st for the #1 overall.
If a team like the Rangers, Stars, Golden Knights or Flyers win #1, a trade could also get done.
    Rangers trade #1, the Car/Toronto pick and 2021 3rd for #3 and #5.
But in all reality, any team picking #1 will take Lafreniere

  18. If a team wit oh 2 1st ed picks wins the #1 pick..I guess a deal for #3 and #5 could work..But if I'm Ottawa…I stay pat and land Byfield/Stutzle and Drysdale/Rossi/Perfetti

  19. Would be interesting if OTT uses the SJ pick from the trade for Karlsson and selects Drysdale at #3.
The 2021 has about 4 awesome D prospects but will OTT be in a position to select Lambos, Edvinsson, Clarke, or Power?

  20. This is a rich draft. #3 & #5 picks will develop into impact players. The Senators must keep those picks.

  21. Ottawa don’t do that. It’s dumb. Stuzle and Rossi combined is better than Lafrenière alone.

  22. NO way Ottawa trades either pick IMO. For an owner that watches the bottom line, Melnyk is not about to pass up on what should be two star players that will be on entry level deals for the next 3 years. There is also an Ottawa connection to a few of these prospects and I am guessing Ottawa is salivating at taking Rossi with the 5th pick
Why would Ottawa not be happy with a potential day of drafting that sees them end up with Stutzle at #3, Rossi at #5 and maybe Quinn at #10?

  23. Trading 3+5 for guys that can “help now”? They’re no where near the playoffs. Trading pick 3 packaged with others for 1 would make sense but obviously won’t happen. Trading both 3+5 for 1 is insane.

  24. Habs not trading 1st pick if they get it. I would only consider it for 2nd and 4th or 2nd and 5th.

  25. Ottawa’s a team that needs everything. They still have NYI’s pick which could be top 8-15… they could potentially get Askarov with that pick. Meaning that it they keep both picks they have the potential to grab Stutzle, Drysdale, and Askarov… One of each! A 1st line Center, Elite D-man, and a franchise goalie in one draft…

  26. As much as I would love Lafrenière, no way I do this trade. 2 elite prospects including a 1C (Byfield/Stutzle) >>> Lafrenière.

Also, I’m starting to like Sanderson over Drydale for the sens in the case they select a d man at 5. Not only is he going to UND where 3 of Ottawa’s prospects already play (JBD, Pinto, Tychonik), but a minute-eating shutdown defenseman with elite skating and good offensive upside on the left in Sanderson would benefit Ottawa more imo, given Brannstrom plays on the right. The ideal future top 4 would then be
    Chabot – JBD
    Sanderson – Brannstrom.

TL;DR If I were Ottawa I would take two forwards but in the case where they take a defenseman, I prefer Sanderson but you can’t really go wrong.

  27. Who are the fools saying that the Sens should trade 3 and 5 for established players…..

    Just draft Byfield/Stutzle and Rossi.
    Case closed.

  28. I think it's probable that the Senators will do at least one or potentially two moves, since they own (2-3) 1st RD picks (3rd, 5th, and possibly Islander's 2020 1st [RECALL: Isles 2020 1st might also go to the Senators because of the J.G. Pageau trade]) and four 2nd RD picks in a deep draft. With the Thachuk, Duclair, White, Connor Brown, Logan Brown and Drake Batherson, the Senators are pretty young and strong at the forward position moving ahead. I see their needs as more defense (though Josh Norris is also in their system) and goaltending, or possibly a #1 center (like everyone)… I could see them trying to move a 1st RD pick to a team who is looking to move an extra goalie, like a Pittsburgh Penguins or New York Rangers. The Penguins are at risk of losing Tristan Jarry due to cap constraints and the Rangers have a problem with Lundqvist(NMC)/Georgiev/Shesterkin vying for net; but I think they'd also have to get something in addition to that goalie, perhaps a defenseman, middle round pick or prospect. They could also pursue a defenseman in this market from a team that's deep in the position. Someone like the Flyers potentially or the Hurricanes. I doubt they give up Stutzle or Byfield to another team, as clearly they are a tier above everyone who comes after them.

  29. I dont see Ottawa trading 3 and 5 for 1. Ottawa gonna use the pick at 3. You would be completely nuts trading that pick. If Detroit look to Drysdale, Raymond or Perfetti, Sens will take the 5th for Rossi, and they will move up the Isles first and aim for Jack Quinn. No Askerov? Nope. For goaltending help, they make a serious pitch at a former senator..Robin Lehner, their former goaltender of the future..for Lehner, that future is now..maybe

  30. Ottawa would never give up both top 5 picks especially knowing they get a chance to draft Byfeild/Stutzle at 3. Gap between those 2 and Lafrenier is not a Rossi or Drysdale or Raymond or even Perfetti. Draft is deep with kids that put up historic numbers in the CHL in their draft years at forward

  31. Don't do it, all you doing is hurting your team, yes you want to make senators better but one wrong move could envect Ottawa big time and you're fans, that will be a biggest mistake and you want fans coming to the games , be responsible. That is my advice for the GM

  32. The sens can keep there 3 and 5 picks. They would develop a package of other round picks they have and add in a few prospects from Belleville or from there current NHL roster.

  33. The Senators are a budget team and have a chance to add two good players that can play right away on ELCs. No chance they move them

  34. I wouldn’t want them to trade both picks. But I wouldn’t mind trading one of them with the isles pick, and maybe some prospects for first.

  35. I have been a Sens fan since they first entered the NHL as a franchise Team from watching them destroy Alexander Daigle by bringing him up to quick to the NHL.. Not all players can handle the jump like Crosby, McDavid and so on… He needed more time to get his grit and baring's to become an elite player.. The hardest thing was watching Alfie go without getting to hoist the Stanley Cup and one of our greatest Sens players of all time.. If you think that we will trade down, well I will keep my words kind and not say what I want to say to you towards that thought A…. The only way we would trade our 3 and 5 th pick is for the 1#. pick. If not I think we get two picks in the top 5 and it is stacked with great players.. They will add to our Team build because face it or not our beloved Sens will not make a big splash until all players and our great prospect pool have matured and play their roll like they are capable of playing.. Do not forget that we have 3 first round picks and ya maybe one pick little high up but do not forget when they selected Alfredsson, a forward from Gothenburg, Sweden, in the sixth round (No. 133) of the 1994 NHL Draft that they'd be getting the best player in their history. So all I can say is GO SENS GO and work together and work hard and then we will be a Great Team in 2-3 years..
