I actually thought Bunting had a strong game … he just doesn't have any help on his line. That being said the best thing would be for the Pens to get passed by Seattle, Anaheim and Nashville … and dare I even say Buffalo. If they can finish in the bottom 3 to 4, that would get them one of Martone, Hagens or Misa in the draft. And that would be something to look forward to.
We're a "re-hab" team. Guess you can't expect anything more from what they've shown us??

Humter, I think this team looks so discouraged. They understand they can't play the system that sully has them playing. So they are beating themselves before they even drop the puck. Crosby has admitted this system is rough for 82 games. So if they aren't perfect then they lose. I seriously think we need a new coach and some youth.
As a Pens for for the past 35 years, this team has quit many, many times during the salary cap era. If they were smart, they would bring back Jarry and go for the #1 pick by stinking the last 30 games.
Yeah that Sharks game feels like the final nail in the coffin for this season. Honestly that was the first game this season that I turned off, after the second period I was like yeah I'm done wasting my time with this, just a completely lifeless effort from them. Hopefully that was the final straw for Dubas, there's no reason to wait this out any longer.
I'm not blaming everything in Sulivan but i think it's time to try something different. Any other coach with these players and at least some decent talent getting nothing from his players and over the last eight seasons, or however long it's been with first round playoff exits and being a Fringe playoff team, or missing the playoffs multiple seasons would have any other coach canned and looking for a new job.Regardless of how many stanley cups or anything else he's done with the team in the past.

I've been trying to think how Dubas can translate the asset grab-bag he has into high-end talent that will be needed to compete. The Pens need to get the 2nd or 3rd ranked prospect out of a contender, preferably a player who is 20 or 21 and close to NHL ready. That will take more than Anthony Beauvillier and a bag of pucks. One of the assets Dubas has are the draft picks he has traded for over the next couple of years. Perhaps one of the contenders will need Grzelcyk's skills to fill an injury gap or qb their PP2. And if we throw in the Rangers 2027 2nd rounder and a 5th rounder from this year, perhaps that allows the trading partner to see enough value to let go of a quality prospect they don't really want to part with.
Dubas is going to have to be very creative, but he has given himself some tools to work with by piling up draft picks and opening cap space at the deadline.
Not sure if they'd move on from Sully if they ended up in the bottom 5, but if they did, how do you feel about Kirk Macdonald taking over?

Changing the coach and staff is the easiest change to make when a team is horribly underperforming. A new voice, a new style of play, a new mindset can mean so much.
Perhaps Sully should just tell the defensemen to play defense first, no pinching, always default to the best defensive play, until they show that they can make good decisions…then give them a little slack, and then maybe some more.
