The wording in finnish in the part where he talked about being willing to take a discount definitely sounds like he didn't plan to leave in free agency
We probably won’t know what really happened until much later. As an Avs fan, it was a shock. I just assumed that it would be like the Landeskog contract, and Mikko would sign long term. But, the Avs haven’t done much in the playoffs the last couple of seasons, and it could be that they realize they need to have more than just one capable line to make a deeper run. If you put Nate and Mikko on the same line, that’s like $25M in payroll on just one line. If that line struggles, goals aren’t coming from the other lines, and the team gets bounced from the playoffs. That’s the gist of MacFarland’s presser.
Can somebody tell me if it is possible for a team and player to mutually void a contract (Nathan Mckinnon) … agree to higher $ contract – so that he would still be higher than Rantinen. !? It seems the issue is the cap has changed… and it was not agreeable that Rantanen would potentialy have a larger contract than Mckinnon/.
It's sad to think that a player is too good for his team. I think Colorado should have paid Mikko his fair value. How many teams in the league other than Colorado would want Mikko on their team? All of them? Most of them? Teams try so hard to be good, and then a great player shows up and they don't want to pay him? He should have gone to a traditional hockey market instead of Carolina. He would have liked it better. If I was a Colorado fan I would be really angry with the team and would boycott them. They could have made it work in Colorado if they really wanted to because the cap is going up, but they didn't.
Firstly, big time, Avs fan here. Also, I am a little shocked. Not by much, though. It's been in the news lately that Mikko probably won't stay with the Avalanche due to money issues. I love Mikko as a player. I don't think he's worth more than 11 million a year imo. Mackinnon makes 12.6m, and he's definitely not worth more than Nathan Mackinnon. Mikko has no personal trophies like Nate has. Never won MVP or the Calder. The only one who would be able to make more than Nate is Cale Makar. Makar is one hell of a defenseman. He's won the Norris and Conn Smythe and did it in the same season on top of that. That's even if Cale Makar takes that sort of money. So what do you do in this situation? Do you trade for a cheaper piece, or do you let Mikko walk? 🤔 at the end of the day, I think the Avalanche made the right choice because they are getting something in return. As much as it hurts me to say it. It just had to happen. Also, he wasn't drafted as high as Mac or Makar. His name isn't brought as much either.
I think if he was willing to take less money to stay, his agents should have been more transparent and understanding of the Avs cap situation. But since he has the same agent as Drai and was reportedly asking for the same number, once the ink dried on Drai’s new 8 x $14mil extension, the Avs management knew they couldn’t afford that and keep Makar while balancing the roster to remain a contender. Them getting Necas was a savvy move. He may not be as good as Mikko, but his speed and skill fits Colorado’s system like a glove which makes his potential to increase his production even higher. Playing next to MacKinnon won’t hurt either.
I never even thought he'd sign for 14mil with the Avs. He's such a straight up guy that he'd downplay his own value. I think the realistic number would have been around 12,5 – 13,25m/y.
Rantanen asked for too much money and was traded. The Avalanche made a business decision. Move along. Nothing to see here.
I can tell you this is all on the agent. The Avs made offers, the agent refused them. Then they went hardball mode and the team did the smart thing.
Imagine if the Avs GM just fleeced the hurricanes and is about to sign Rantanen as a free agent

A lot of unknowns here but two of his comments strike me. "How brutal the NHL business side is" and how "surprised" he was. He had since July to sign, just like Drai did. Clearly if you choose not to sign, it means you did not come to an agreement. To say afterward, you were going to make a deal for less is ridiculous. You had 7 months to say yes. Now one month before trade deadline where the team will no longer get anything if you walk, you are "Surprised"…. Really? It would be brutal if the Avs didn't trade him and got nothing. If his agent is not aware of or explained to his client the "Standard practice" of teams trading away unsigned coveted players to avoid losing them for nothing, then the blame lies clearly on him.
Colorado has shown that they are loyal to their home grown talent and are willing to pay them. There's plenty of info that Mikko would not move off 14 and that Colorado offered him 12. With Makar's contract coming up, you can't sign him and Mikko and have any depth to win another championship. Good business move for the future, albeit very painful.
the real mistake that doesn't seem to get brought up is the big failure on the front office imo. They should have known that they absolutely had to get a dear dont before Edmonton blew the market up. If they had gone first they probably would have been able to get Mikko at 12 to 12.5, but they were not aggressive enough. For those who keep saying the FO was being cheap….stop with the short sighted nonsense. They could have paid him 15 million, and Cale 16 shortly after, and then proceeded to be a dumpster of a team because they would not be able to afford anything else. It was an appropriate response to the initial failure
that dont send a good message to the colorado lockeroom, wouldnt be surprised if things didnt go as well mackinnon requests a trade, i also think whe he said he was taking a "signficant discount" i really feel like he wasnt asking over mackinnon
I've got to wonder if Mikko had any clue about the conversations going on between his agent and the Avs. I doubt it, if he's being honest. It's obvious the Avs didn't communicate with Mikko on this. One of his best friends plays on the canes and I get the feeling that he will want to get a deal done now with carolina. I doubt he hits the F/A market.
Can avs keep makar if mckinnon is the cap?
Like most athletes Mikko wanted way too much money and the Av's said no. Easy for him to say he would have take a discount after being traded
Avs made the right decision. Get some value from him now as opposed to giving him all the leverage in negotiations as it's coming down to the wire. Mikko is very talented but extremely lazy at times. Between Nate, Cale and Mikko, Mikko is the most expendable. Good on Avs management for getting something as opposed to him leaving for nothing
