  1. Carolina is the clear winner in this trade. The Avs had to do what they had to do so they don’t just have a player walk with nothing to show for it. Chicago is the loser in this trade. Frankly I’m shocked they gave up Hall and are signaling they are going deeper into this rebuild. Connor Bedard has to be growing incredibly frustrated with the Blackhawks.

  2. I'm pretty sure Mikko had a no-trade clause, so he would have had to agree to this move. He wanted too much money if the reporting is correct. Can't keep Makar, MacKinnon, Rantanen without becoming the Leafs. It makes a lot of sense. He was gone at the end of his contract. Avs traded 30 some games with Mikko for assets rather than Mikko walking with nothing in it for the Avs.

  3. Unless Mikko vetoes it because he doesn’t like the fit or the city, I can’t see a world where Carolina doesn’t re-sign him.

This is a completely different situation from Guentzel last year. In that situation the Canes had a ton of pending UFAs and only about $20m to fill the gaps (including re-signing Jarvis long-term).

This year, they don’t have that situation. Biggest UFAs are now Mikko, Burns, Orlov, and Hall (keeping the guys who signed for just 1 year out of this list) and about $35-$40m in cap space based on projections for next season.

So basically… $14m or anything close to that is a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of space they have and the Canes during the Dundon ownership era have been a cap team every year, so they’ll spend to the cap.

Burns/Orlov are likely to sign for much less than their current cap hits if they re-sign, and would have plenty of space to fill out their bottom six and even address goaltending (as Freddie’s deal expires this season).

In short, Canes win this hands down. It’s far more likely than not that they re-sign Rantanen and the way they’ve built this roster… they could be a big problem for the league for more years to come.
