Hurricanes too much for Stars as Dallas falls 2-1: How far are the Stars away from a contender??

On today’s episode of Locked On Stars, Joey Erickson reacts to the Dallas Stars 2-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday night. The big question to kick off the show is how far off is Dallas from being a true cup contender? Joey shares his thoughts on the Stars performance and why he feels the Stars are a long way from getting to the level Carolina is currently at. On the bright side, Roope Hintz returned to action! We talk about what we saw from Hintz in his first game back from injury and other positive performances from likes of Wyatt Johnston, Logan Stankoven, Miro Heiksanen and Esa Lindell. We close out the show discussing the Stars biggest needs and how Lian Bichsel will play a pivotal role for the Stars in April.

  1. We’re not far off from being where we need to be. But contenders have a PP. Something we don’t currently have. We need to turn it around if we want to have a chance. If we don’t get things fixed soon. We may not make it in, and if we do we won’t go far. Two years ago, no lead was safe. Not sure why or how things changed but it’s not a good look for sure.

  2. Our numbers compare to the team from last year but, we sure don’t look like it. I don’t remember being so frustrated last year this much.
Our passing is atrocious. We pass to areas instead of people specifically. Seems like on the PP, Miro is the only one trying to to hold the point. Pucks find their way out of the zone too often. Our entries into the zone are pathetic. We’re not far off where we need to be, I just don’t know if we will get there. There’s a chance it can be turned around. I hope they do.

  3. I’m not AS concerned, I feel like we would have to be as lucky as Robertson was on his 50 goal campaign, but it could happen. I feel like the last pieces of the puzzle is finishing touch on shots, and some physicality. I don’t think 1 physical player is enough, I feel like it would take 2. Every year Dallas adds one physical player it has nearly no impact. If seguin comes back and isn’t out of touch and cold, I think we would need one more finisher. It’s possible that one of our current guys could become a finisher (borque, stankoven, steel, or lungvust). Idk how many star power forwards in the league are for sale. I also don’t know if Dallas has any star power forwards in their farm system.

I think it might be time to get off of Pete and his system. We need someone like rob who gets the players a little more gritty. There’s no reason why robo can’t be aggressive, let Benn off the chain some, and find one more more grizzled guy. It’s not like having an aggressive guy instead of steel, or Blackwell would cost the team much production.

  4. Put Seguin on LTIR, bring Bichsel up for good so he's ready for the post season, go after 1 or 2 offensive guys to help with scoring.

  5. I was at this game, I thought they dominated in terms of generating opportunities, it's just not enough of the opportunities were/are good opportunities. And the Canes sunk 2 of their like 5 good opportunities they had the whole game. They're putting in 100%, it's just not quite measuring up to the competition right now. That's what I observed right now anyway.

They also took a totally pointless, kind of shithead penalty early in the game with that slewfootish play on the goalie. That stuff has no place on a cup contender team 😢.

  6. I dont know how possible it is, but id love them to go out and get JT Miller. They really need another aggressive veteren leader. Been saying it for awhile, Benn cannot be the only one throwing his body around and forcing our opponents to respect our physicality. Finesse only takes you so far, make them feel it in the morning

  7. True, they got screwed on that Jarvis slot move but that stuff goes both ways all year. I've seen the Canes get screwed on stuff. Can't really say that would have been a huge determining factor 😑.

  8. They're definitely not a cup contender. Playoff team yeah……a one or two and done. They need another prolific offensive C/F and a big body defenseman. They lead the league in giving up answer goals in less than a minute after scoring one. They got dominated by a team that was on the second night of a back to back. Waaaaay too many turnovers in their own end all season long and 80% end up in their own net. Absolutely NOT contenders.

  9. I don’t know Joey,
Close game, Stars stepped up their physical game, and had some good looks. Bad bounces go both ways, and the referee needs to be consistent. Sometimes I think we need some work on the defensive end. Better outcome from their first meeting! Grateful for the close game!! ⭐️💚. Let’s hang in there!

  10. I agree with everything you said Joey. I’m trying to be positive though and trust that Jim Nill will make another Tanev type of move and that Bischel will get called up again sometime around 4 nations. We definitely need two more players who bring physicality and toughness for the playoffs.

  11. Dallas just look like they have no motivation. Maybe they don’t like playing for Deboer. We can blame the defense all we want but the forwards have fault. They just stand around letting the other teams attack the defense. It’s just like they’re just waiting to get the puck and go the other way. This team needs a big wake up call. Either a big trade or 2 and change of coach or PP coach. Something.

  12. Too many turnovers by our defense so I think we need a good solid defenseman sort of like Lindell. And that might be all we need when we get everybody back.

  13. Bright future has been thrown around for a decade. We’ve done everything to the tune of all the cup winners of the last decade plus. Why don’t we have a ring? Nill at some point he needs to push those chips to the center and quit worrying dimming the perennially bright future by casting off “prized” picks and young potential bc what the hell are you saying to Duchene Benn Seguin and Pavs before them? Why did Duchene take less to stay here? Why did Pavs? Why did Suter come here? Nill needs to take a swing for the love of Mike lol we’ve been to 3 western conference finals and a Stanley cup final the last 5 seasons and have no hardware to show for it. Stop hedging on always being “in the conversation” instead of shooting your shot for this season!

  14. VGK fan here, I agree with Joey as it seems like the Stars need a couple supporting D men and maybe another scorer to be able to make a run. You also have the DeBoer factor to overcome, which I know can be super frustrating at times. We always struggled on the PP while he was here. GKG!!! Looking forward to the next couple games against the Stars to see if we can flip our current struggles too!

  15. Hey Joey, slightly over reacting; I agree that the Stars need at least one more sold defenseman and a forward. Bishell should be moved up to the active roster now so he can continue to improve his game at the NHL level. Let's face it, the Canes got a fluke goal and won the game and I think your episode would have been much different had the Stars gotten the goal and won 2-1. The Stars defensemen as a group lack offensive skills other than Miro and Harley. Dumba needs to go.
