Carolina acquired star right winger Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche, the teams announced on Friday night.
The deal is part of a three-team trade involving the Chicago Blackhawks. The Hurricanes will also acquire left winger Taylor Hall, the Avalanche will receive centres Martin Necas and Jack Drury, and the Blackhawks will get a third-round pick and retain 50 per cent of Rantanen's $9.25M cap hit.
Colorado is also receiving Carolina's 2025 second-round pick and 2026 fourth-round pick in the trade.
shut up Mr. Eck, when things are quiet, that's when trades happen. And things were quiet until this bullsh*t happened. Obviously a steal. And obviously a money changer but who cares. I do not believe Carolina will win this year. Nor will Colorado. It will likely be Edmonton, Vegas, Florida or perhaps Winnipeg. But probably one from that group.
As a Canes fan, I'm excited, but I also have a "wait and see" attitude here. Will Rantanen actually be able to provide that playoff spark and help get us over that hump? Or will this just be a repeat of the Guentzel fiasco from last season, where he came in to a similar giant fanfare, but then did little for us in the playoffs and then dipped?
We know the Canes are good in the regular season. The real test comes playoff time.
this is another trade that the canes robbed, necas is no where as good as rantanen, the avs should have got at least a 1st back for him, im just hoping that rantanen walks in the offseason!

Eck as a Colorado fan I am shocked that you didn't know that Rantanen wanted out. The Avs and Rantanen weren't even close on the next contract and many in Colorado have been expecting there to be a trade. Rantanen wants a long-term 8+ year deal was the rumor and also that he wanted more than MacKinnon is making.
This was almost know here. Our local news medias been speculating about this all season. Where Mikko went was mystery and when but it has been excpected

There were talks about Rantanen going to Carolina, but I did not see Avs letting him go. I mean it kinda makes sense, but it also doesn't 😅
