A Look at the Recent Struggles of the Jets and Devils

Hey all and it’s a comparison video once again as I look at a team in the West and in the East who are both having some struggles mid-season.

  1. Devils have two scoring lines that are struggling to produce and hardly any depth. Their fourth line is good for what it is, but you need much better from the top two. Better puck possession and time on attack in the offensive zone. Some two way hockey would also be an asset, so many blue line and neutral zone turnovers and nothing from the forwards resembling an effective back check. Markstrom acquisition should be a sure-fire into the playoffs this season, but how many clutch saves per game can you have? Palat, Meier and Hischier need to play better if I was to call anyone out, though Hischier has been trying. 3rd line is abysmal there needs to be some shake ups there.

I'm less worried about the Jets, they can afford a January slump, and other teams are going to play better against them as the season progresses. Still think they will hold the top of the Central division, they honestly can play .500 hockey from this point on and still manage a decent season. I still don't think its their year to take the conference, pretty sure its all Oilers through to the final, but if a team was going to upset the Oil, its probably the Jets this year.

  2. I think Jersey turns this around, the bigger concern for them will be the playoffs. I have not watched a ton admittedly, but what I have watched of them, they don't seem to have the grit that is needed for deep playoffs runs. sometimes teams hide that til the playoffs start, but currently I am unsure I see it in them.

  3. Unfortunately, New Jersey got knocked into number 4 on the Eastern Conference standing. The only way to get back up is to win tomorrow's game against Boston! As for the Canucks, they have to win tonight to get back above the playoff line. They face the LAME, SUCKY Buffalo Sabres.

  4. A bit concerned, but no panic. Chevy needs to find a 2C, because Namestnikov ain't it. If they don't find someone to play with Ehlers, he's going to walk.

  5. I don't really worry about the Devils… Still pretty good team. Watched all recent games (apart from PHI), and I don't think they play badly overall, it's just their passes/synergy is somehow off… Meier played one of the best 2-way game last month or so… yea, his scoring took a hit, but definitely valuable player on the roster… Palat and Mercer just cannot score… they've had some of the best chances… Also, Luke has to stop sniping that bars… he had so many of them recently… if 2-3 of them went into the net we wouldn't have this conversation… In terms of trade, I don't know… Palat was brought because of PO experience, so it would be weird to trade him out now… Mercer maybe for an experienced top line winger… Defence is pretty much set… They might consider Kovasevic as a rental maybe… Allen, don't know… he played well, definitely something to consider since Daws somehow …. Probably, just add some veteran depth and let rest to the offseason

  6. It’s interesting what the Jets are trying with Lowry at 2c. I don’t know if that’s the move for the playoffs though. Could trade for a 2c but how many times can you try the same thing, they’ve been down that road with no results before.
All I know for certain is they can’t continue to play Logan Stanley, the guy is a liability out there.

  7. Keefe has done nothing to improve NJ. If NJ did not have outstanding goaltending, they would be in the dumps.

  8. This Jets fan is not too worried yet. I believe in Arniel. I think he can get the players to buy back in, screw their heads on right again. we shall find out in fairly short order. The Jets will have to ramp everything up in February until the end of the season.

  9. My 2 favorite teams are the Caps and Devils (i know, weird to have 2 teams in the same division) but I'm a Caps fan first and foremost. The Devils have talent, no denying that. Ive wanted them to be a playoffs team again for years so i hope they figure it out. But, I do love what my Caps are doing rn. Go Caps.

  10. For NJs UFAs it is pretty simple: Tatar, Bastian, Allen – all out. Lazar – keep. Kovacevic – probably won't be able to keep him because of Luke's upcoming contract and Nemec / Casey coming soon.

  11. Thanks for the thoughts on the Jets… as Ehlers' biggest fan, I am banking on him taking a team-friendly deal and staying in Winnipeg for his entire NHL career. He has looked happier than I've seen in a long time since being paired with Lowry. They play well together. And when I look at Lowry's stats this year, his numbers (playing primarily a shutdown role) are higher than Vlad Namestnikov's numbers (who got 2nd line C slotting until he got injured).

But some people think Lowry can't do the 2C, even though his numbers show he has been the second best centre all year long. (Scheifele being the 1st). I believe we will see career stats for Lowry if he stays with Nik because Nik gets him the puck and can work magic with his speed and skill on the ice. Of course, I'm concerned now about Lowry's injury, hoping he'll be back for the game vs the Avs. He and Nik and Iafallo shut down the MacKinnon line and got Helle a shutout last time we played them. Our stumbles in games primarily happen when we lose important roster players (like Ehlers and Samberg earlier in the season and now one game was lost when the Captain wasn't in the lineup). Otherwise, the play has been stable all season, from what I've seen and I watch the numbers closely to see if the stats match the eye test from me.

it is a bit of a stumble, yes but Jets will come roaring back to life, I can promise you that, Shannon. And I'd be over the moon if the boys could win the President's Trophy this year. Don't count them out yet.

  12. As a not so big watcher of Winnipeg, im not concerned just pure numbers wise. They could replicate this last 10 game win% to the end of the season and cakewalk a playoff spot.

  13. The superstitios NJ fans are saying that the winter break vame at the wrong time, the coping NJ fans are saying that the officiating has been biased against us, the optimistic NJ fans are saying it's just a slump, and im just worried that we're gonna choke and miss the playoffs

  14. As a devils fan i am concerned. Something has to be off in the lockeroom, i cant imagine blaming keefe because of how the season started. Im hoping they can win tonight and get the W. This team is one of the best in the league when everyone is clicking.

  15. Devils fan here. Before January I was always under the presumption that the devils weren’t as good as their record showed and the rangers weren’t as bad as their record showed. The real season starts in January. And right now the devils need to right the ship. Playing .500 hockey thru the remainder of the season won’t be enough. That will get them 91 points. This is almost panic territory.

  16. With the amount of parity in the league, it’s not that these teams are struggling, it’s more a factor that a long season, injuries, etc is a grind. Jets stunk it up against Utah but then beat Colorado in Denver. They are still solidly in 2nd place overall.
