Oilers fans have lost it

Well, Connor McDavid is suspended and fans of the Edmonton Oilers are not happy – we’ll talk that as we discuss the Vancouver Canucks vs the Edmonton Oilers on today’s NHL hockey videos!

  1. Timo Meier got a two game suspension for a cross check to the face. I can’t say this kind of thing is unheard of.

  2. Stop giving Wes games to referee. You don't hold a guy down for 15-20 seconds in the crucial moments of a game and not call a penalty. Would it have changed the outcome of the game? Probably not, but it would have saved arguably both McDavid and Myers from getting 3 games each and big fines to boot. Wes is a joke of a ref at this point, proven best in the playoffs. He wants his clippable moments of saying penalties out loud in a goofy way, that's it. Embarrassing for the refs to let a game get out of hand this close to the finish because you didn't feel like calling a penalty. Bottom line though; Don't crosscheck people in the effing face you lunatics.

  3. Both do deserve the same suspension. Should it have been 1 game? Possibly, but this is not a bad decision from the NHL.

  4. I feel like the funniest way for oil country to retaliate to this whole situation is that going into tomorrow rematch against Vancouver instead of booing garland, just boo the refs everytime they do something. Blow an icing, boo. Goalie makes a save, boo. When they take the ice, boo. What would be funnier is when the “let’s go oilers” chant starts going instead replace the words with, “do your job”, or “you need glasses”, or if they get call on a penalty “you’re so biased”. Stuff like that would be a perfect way to protest against the league without too much reprocussion, super easy to start. Super funny to watch back on highlights. I bet more than a few fans will show up with walking canes and, sunglasses and ref jerseys.

  5. Hockey has gone soft and has stayed irrelevant, 3 games for that is ludicrous. No wonder the NHL is so irrelevant. I'm not an oilers fan, I'm not even a hockey fan because it's so garbage as seen here.

  6. Timo Meier got a 1 game for cross checking a Preds guy in the face. Why does Connor get 3? Seems inconsistent and idgaf about mcdavid OR the oilers

  7. Maybe call the penalty first and that doesn't happen. It's not the suspension that's a problem. All the rat shit that happens on a game-to-game basis needs to go. It's gutless and pathetic. Guys like Garland, Marchand, Bennett… hell even Kucherov does it all the time. That stuff is so cheap and then we all act surprised that McDavid finally loses his shit. I'd say 1 game and hopefully they start paying attention to the bear hugging and slew footing, etc.

  8. Because it was a retaliation it shouldn't have been 3 games considering that the refs should have done something after being mugged for that length of time. This forces any player to exercise their own justice. It wasn't an action it was a reaction. The only reason he got 3 games is because he is MCdavid and is held to a higher standard than the average player. An average player would not have gotten 3 games. But because MCdavid is above and beyond in comparison, they look at him as the face of the NHL. This is the officials fault, period. I don't care how good he is, if someone commits an offense it needs to be called. That's why we have officials to police this very physical game that can easily turn into exactly what happened if the officials don't do their job. At the NHL level they need to take their pride or prejudice out of it and do their job. He is a human being and you can't expect him to just eat 100 out of 100 violations without him reaching his breaking point. He's the best in the league by far so the standard they hold him to is as unfair as his impact in the game but what is he supposed to not play his best. This is a catch 22 for him, because he is so good he is going to get violated and he just has to take it because he is so good but that's the wrong message to send to his opponents because they are going to violate him as much as they're allowed to. The rules are there for a reason so if the officials were doing their job it would have never gotten to the point of his reaction. This is exactly like the world shaking will Smith for smacking Chris Rock but never hold Chris Rock accountable. Something that many people are not taught in childhood is taking accountability for yourself. I teach my children if they push someone and they get pushed back do not come crying to anyone playing the victim. Society always holds the reaction more accountable than the initial action which takes accountability from the trouble maker. Worst case scenario should have been one game suspension but because it was a cross check to a man with a helmet on after mugging him for a full minute they should of gotten matching minors. Why does Garland get to get away with what he did, what because MCdavid is so good? That's nonsense and real adults with some integrity and honor know it. He should not be taken advantage of because he's way better than everyone else. This is a professional sport with rules and laws need to be enforced. If they're not enforced and the let the players do what they want then let them do what they want on both ends. Don't push someone and then cry "victim" when you get punched in the face. Teach your kids accountability and empathy. There's consequences to your actions yet MCdavid who was violated initially has to made an example of. Everyone knows he's not a dirty player so suspending him for 3 games isn't because he's just getting out of control. Guys have been suspended less games for more and everyone in touch with reality knows it. Stop picking on dude just because he undresses whole teams on a regular basis. All of a sudden it ain't no fun when the rabbit has the gun. I expect better from the top tier in this sport. If you can't be fair In the league then the whole rule book needs to be revamped. I've never seen so Many goals called back because of some sensitive grown men. Take the contact out the sport if you're so sensitive, otherwise everyone do their job and stop with the complaining. Y'all better understand that the fans makes it happen and as a fan I'm highly disappointed in how the game has been policed lately.

  9. Suspension was deserved, no question. But… since the refs weren't willing to do their job and call an obvious blatant penalty, that Garland dope needed a smack in the chops. Props to McD for issuing the proper reallignment to the guy. Connor's standing as a player just went up in this Jets fans' estimation. He should serve his deserved suspension as a badge of honor. And if the ref had made the call none of this would be an issue.

  10. Two things can be true at the same time:

    1. Committing an infraction (harmful or not) late in the game to try to secure a win like Garland did (and admitted he was doing!) SHOULD be penalized, and honestly, something like extending the game clock until the end of the penalty time, or calling an instant penalty shot if the penalty occurs with less time left in the game than the penalty would last for are both ideas that have been tossed around and should be considered. Taking a penalty late to try to stall out a win when you have a narrow lead shouldn't be rewarded.

    2. McDavid (and Myers) deserved the suspension.

  11. I still don’t think most people get it, most of us get the suspension, except like the extreme fans, which there’s always that for every team, saw plenty of Rangers fans say the Rempe 7 game suspension shouldn’t have been anything, so why bring up most the extreme stupid ones like they make up most the fan base? I usually chalk it up to people being dumb as it usually is. But what me and most of the other fans are asking is why the hell is it allowed to get to that point? I don’t care if we didn’t win, I don’t care if we didn’t get a power play, I don’t care if there was only 3 seconds left, if there would have been a penalty up coming, even with 3 seconds left, this may not have happened. Or just call the game fair because that wasn’t the only missed call that game. Because the only way most D defend him is grabbing and holding and slashing and just repeat penalties over and over and over, but he’s the best player so calling the like 3 or 4 missed calls a game against “wouldn’t be fair”, but call the calls, did he deserve a suspension? Ya, but the why is there other cross checks to the head in recent memory have less games? The one everyone been comparing to is Matthews at the outdoor game on Dahlin, that was 2, why was this different? Both deserved a suspension, why different? And the wild game everyone talking about the chicken wing, but Drai had his feet literally kicked out from under him like a soccer ball by Hartman and there was nothing there, why no one talking about that? Why is Mac and McDavid combined on pace to draw less the half the penalties they drew last year? 50 and 47 I think to one pace for 25 and 22 each, did the league get more clean? Well clearly not, this play literally shows that, ok then why is McDavid now 197th in the league in drawn penalties? With Mac lower? Your tell me that the two guys who are the fastest and best, and probably touch the puck the most in the league, draw so few penalties? But are put under a microscope for every little thing they do? Same with Matthews, Crosby, Kucherov, Drai, go to the back end, Quinn Hughes, Makar, like these guys are put under such a microscope that any little thing they get a punishment, but everyone else is like “eh, whatever” the league does not give a single f**k about the stars and they don’t protect them, because everyone can get away with anything on them, I’m an oiler fan so I know more incidents around like other things where there was a dirty play with no suspension or punishments, or small ones with other plays getting similar punishments, and the plays are like drastically different and I’m like how are these the same? But I’m sure other fans of other teams have the same issue. Even just look at this, how is it really only McDavid being talked about? Honestly Myers was worse because Bouchard was like just standing there, but the head lines is McDavid even though he doesn’t even get him in the face, side of the head yes, and Garland also goes up with the stick, but McDavid just hit harder, the league needs to change something, or more stars are going to get hurt, and start retaliating with shit like this and the leagues big names for marketing will be sitting out for suspensions. Fix your s**t NHL, because your a joke of a league

  12. These are the same people who call for Tom Wilson to be executed on live TV for his hits. It’s hockey. If you do something reckless and against the rules you will be suspended.

  13. Im from NZ and ice hockey really isnt a thing here so I only just started following the NHL. I fully admit I still dont know a lot about the rules and whatnot. So this whole event has been interesting to follow and I don't understand some of it haha. Like I get they both got suspensions, that makes sense. However the two cross checks definitely had different circumstances but have been treated the same in suspensions but McDavid has been fined more. So in a way they are saying his incident was worse.
But it definitely seemed like he was provoked whereas the other guy wasnt, so shouldnt there be either mitigating circumstances in McDavids case, or shouldnt it be seen as more aggressive to go after an 'innocent' party in the other case?
I also dont understand why when reviewing the incidents, they dont have some kind of punishment for the very obvious violations that led up to McDavid smacking that dudes face. Like a fine or 2 game suspension for unsportsmanlike conduct or something like that?

It seems to me that with no punishment then teams will be encouraged to do the same thing at the end of other games when it is tight.

  14. With the missed suspension on the minnesota elbow to the head. 3 games for the crosscheck to the head is fine. It's not like oilers are out of the playoff spot

  15. Crosby nearly has his career ended on MULTIPLE occasions and never took anything more than a 5 minute major after dropping the gloves. He was the literal punching bag of the league for the better part of 10 years and got his revenge on the score sheet. Now he is undoubtedly one of the most respected players in the league. Seriously, when u can have the fans in philly sayin "man I HATE crosby more than any player ever, but I can't help but respect him

  16. Most oiler fans do realize this is a good suspension. We’re frustrated at the refs and player safety for letting Connor mcdavid get rag dolled every game. Don’t paint all oilers fans as idiots.

  17. As an oilers fan – this really shocked me. Me and my buddies all think a two game suspension would have been adequate but not one of us was up in arms about three games. I wonder if all the noise is a minority of Oilers fans making wave…. I just don’t see it in my circles.

  18. Nobody has mentioned that it looks as if McDavid was actually trying to keep Garland down after he fell on him. I think that is what lead to Garland holding him so egregiously

  19. Oiler fans singing a different tune now after they were happy about goon Kassian attacking star player Tkachuk for legal hits

  20. Get an enforcer, or get a mcjesus mental snap…bedard not mcdavid at all, but when did he get that kinda treatment, a broken jaw?

  21. So basically people don’t understand that two wrongs don’t make a right. Just because a) penalties should be called more when people mess with a star, b) the other guy started it, and/or c) what about [insert example here], those do not cancel out the initial penalty. Instead of saying “an eye for an eye,” how about we penalize them both!

  22. If you're a Panther – that's 1 game. Just saying. Their anger is based on the NHL's inability to remain consistent.

  23. Oh what a bunch of babies. Shame on Sportsnet's Marc Spector. Lets talk about McCry and McDive. He does so many things that do not get called : elbows and shoulders to the head, slashing, trips, and running other players this year and no penalties are called? Regardless you can put lipstick on Edmonton but its still Edmonton.

  24. I disagree with this video. Yes mcdavid crosschecked and it was wrong. However player safety is always used as an excuse, jacob trouba when he was playing for the rangers literally baseball swings his stick at frederic's head and gets a 5k fine. I'm tired of the NHL's shenanigans as a whole. Be consistent that's what oilers fans like myself want. The officiating sucks more specifically wes mccaugley sucks and is a liability for any team anytime he laces up his skates. Then the nhl player safety commission is inconsistent because last year during the playoffs two vancouver players crosscheck mcdavid from both sides and one headshots mcdavid and carson sucky is only out for a game.
    It's ludicrous.

  25. As an Oilers fan, I agree, the fans should chill out. Am I pissed for the no call? Yes. But you cant cross check someone in the face.

  26. Da Fok, remember the slogan of CCM: If you can't stand the heat, get off the ice. Star player or not, that slogan counts for every hockey player.

  27. Salty people saying that Garland should've gotten suspended are just stupid. He should've gotten a penalty for sure, but definately not suspended. He was holding a star player so that he couldn't score, which is a bit scummy, but not dangerous. McDavid cross checked Garland IN THE HEAD, AWAY FROM THE PUCK WITH NO OTHER INTENTIONS THAN TO INJURE HIM. Huge difference right there.

  28. I found someone's comment down below perplexing but also correct in its truthfulness. A commenter wrote "They just spin the wheel when it comes to punishments". I wanted to elaborate on this unreal comment, it's truthfulness is absolutely right. Players do actually face more severe punishment for less crime. And the opposite is just as true. What Myers did is obviously more dangerous. Bouchard wasn't ready for that from Myers. Garland was ready. He and McDavid were wrestling out there and if you're going after a swarm of bees, you're going to get stung unless you can run so fast that even Ben Johnson can't catch you ! So watch out if you're around bees, obviously ! Myers is an idiot. McDavid obviously isn't. And It's true that the league wanted BOTH out of the next contest between both Edmonton and Vancouver which is tonight (Thursday, 23 January 2025, 9 pm EST) so peace triumphs. But at what cost ? Right, removing the most skilled player in the league for what cannot be called a cheap shot. Myers' cross check was a cheap shot. Difference in games should have been 2. Total 1 game for McDavid and 3 for Myers. Or 2 for McDavid, 4 for Myers, etc. Not 3 and 3. But as usual, the NHL never gets it f*ckin right.

  29. Canucks fan here, and the main problem is the level of the officiating is so bargain basement it's not even funny. We saw a small bit of it when Auger and Peel got caught fudging games, but who knows how deep the lack of accountability goes?

And to all the Oilers fans whinging about how their boy McJesus got penalized for cross-checking a guy in the head… how about he does the mature thing and not cross-check a guy in the head? Same goes for our idiot Myers.

  30. Did mcdavid deserve a 3 game suspension? Ya probably. He lost his cool. But garland did deserve a punch in the face. (with a hand and not a stick)

I don't fault mcdavid for losing his cool. But we definitely need to see some refs getting suspensions for non calls.

  31. I think both should have been suspended. The NHL has said by the recent discipline is that slew-foots are the cheaper way to be dirty, or a rat. Between the incentive to cheat in the last minute and the lack of treating dangerous plays the same regardless of if they are the fashionable concern for the NHL.

  32. I don't think anyones complaning about his amount of drawn calls since 2015, its just this year suddenly he's not getting calls. It's a massive drop off even from last year. Eck and Jfresh hand waive it saying it's a small sample size… it's been half a season already! What's the explanation for this? Penalty calls aren't down overall, just on McDavid and MacKinnon seemingly
