We’re talking about the Detroit Red Wings and some recent discourse on the subreddit as to whether or not they could be a playoff team, and if they should focus on the lottery instead.

NO! They are NOT a playoff team. They will not be this year unless they unload all of the useless unplayable UFA’s that Stevie signed. The only way out: waive – Copp, Fletcher, Compher, Holl, Petry, & Chariot. A team cannot play three games – important games – and score THREE (3) GOALS!!! If all the UFA’s clear waivers – put them ‘on the bus’ in Toledo – they’ll quit, believe me! Then bring up the prospects and let them play!!!
Tank. Do it now so we have a better pick. Not this garbage "statistically possible" games
Moneypuck says the Wings have a 11.7% chance of making the playoffs. That seems pretty accurate. They would be better off spending the rest of the season getting McLeland’s system in place, developing younger players and hopefully getting a better (top 5?) draft pick.
We were out of it before Todd got here. And not to put full blame on Lalonde because the roster got weaker this year.
A team that can't score 5 on 5 isn't built for the playoffs. We can't score at even strength and our team defense isn't great either. Guys like Kane and Lyon have over performed this year but we can't expect them to help carry us forever
And I have to agree with the other commenter, if we extend this losing streak bad enough, might as well give more prospects a taste of the big leagues.
Geeze, what a mess still. Everybody not giving 110% regularly needs to GO. And please no more signings like Justin Holl. That guys lucky to be near the NHL, let alone get paid over 3 million…but we begged San Jose to eat up Jake Walman's very similar contract?!? Makes me want to pull my hair out
Already missed the window to tank when they fired Lalonde. Team's gonna pick 14th overall again, overdevelop that pick in the minors for a few years, and eventually see that player be the best center on Modo Hockey.
Lets be real they have a 0% chance of making the playoffs. Philly, Columbus, Ottawa, Montreal, Boston, NY Rangers all are better than the Wings
If they happen to make playoffs they'll be out in first round. They're still not playing as a team
I don’t think it’s as complicated as it seems. Yes, too good for a top pick (with no great lottery history to speak of) and likely not good enough to grab a spot in the postseason. I agree! However I believe this team plays to win and they have shown when things go right they can beat any team in the league, though that’s very inconsistent. If the Wings decide to cool the jets this season for a wildcard run it is my sincere hope that they do it by attempting to move or wave said players like Kane, Copp, Compher… players who may be on short time and or are not exactly in Detroit’s plans for the future. Bring up the young guns. Let’s see what we have! Let’s showcase them and see what offers we can get. It’s certainly not pretty, but I think this team is a lot closer than we realize to being a perennial competitor for and in the postseason. Don’t forget, we have fabulous prospects in Europe right now who will likely be making the jump to North American ice next season, if not late THIS season.
It's too far into the rebuild to tank. How about we focus on player development and shaking things up. No player should be safe except Seider, Larkin, and Raymond.
Also, wings are 0-10 on 1st AND 2nd half of back to backs. They go 5-5 in that span and they’re 2pts back of florida and these discussions aren’t happening. Todd will clean that up. Was the 1st back to back with him and the helm
