The Montreal Canadiens came back from a deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning and reclaim a Wild Card spot (for the time being). We recap the game in our first segment, heap praise upon Samuel Montembeault’s bounce back performance in our second segment, then talk about the Habs’ need for discipline in our third segment. As always, we have our daily trivia as well.

  1. I just think it's a very good team now. It's pretty close to 2 months as a top 5 team in most metrics now and if they can get to the 4 Nations cup anywhere within 3 pts of the playoffs they need to heavily consider investing in this year. With 9 picks in the first 4 rounds of the draft and prospects like Joshua Roy, Filip Mesar, and Adam Engstrom, they have as much ammunition as any team to go get a David Savard replacement in the everyday lineup and put him on the bench for depth and leadership. They have the cap space to do it as well at just over 6.3mil. They are getting career years from almost all their veterans and if the second line gets going too, can you imagine it? A tough 4 line team with a deep physical defence and great goaltending can make a lot of noise in the dance. We could easily get regression in the lineup from all the vets next year or their young replacements aren't quite ready. Of the 2 years this might actually be the better opportunity to get our young players that necessary taste of playoffs, and no team in the east is an unbeatable juggernaut the way Florida or Tampa have been in recent years. I hear what Ian and Laura are saying about managing expectations but the opportunity cost imho is high. To me the next 2 weeks decide it but I think they're good now. Teams just figure it out sometimes, and sometimes you get lucky and 2 rookies play like all-stars. Ride this. They aren't gonna win every game but this team isn't a mirage. The Habs are good again.

  2. Ian, Laura on the subject of discipline, do you think that the Habs high penalty rate could be mitigated in the playoffs by the refs putting away their whistles as they do every year?

  3. Should be 5 70point players. At first I thought of Suzuki, Koivu, Pacioretty, Kovalev and Plekanec. Then I remembered that Pacioretty always had only 60+ seasons and that Max Domi had a freak first season in Montreal. It also helps that most of these happened when I was a kid and had the time to follow stats.
