Jirishanca: Josh Wharton & Vince Anderson Climb a New Route in Peru | Patagonia Films

Josh Wharton is the most accomplished alpinist you’ve never heard of. But while he’s been quietly crushing ambitious objectives to little or no fanfare, fatherhood, and warming weather have begun to reshape the world he knew. When Wharton and his climbing partner Vince Anderson attempt to take the 2003 Italian route to the summit of Jirishanca in Peru, they’re forced to account for risk as never before.

Check out Josh Wharton’s story about the ascent with photos by Drew Smith, originally published in the Spring 2023 Patagonia Journal

  1. Good film but poor show on editting out the other team on the summit that had climbed from another route on the same day. Not great climbing ethics not to cover this aspect of the story

  2. kinda hilarious to open up the film with a white person's butchered pronunciation of the mountain the entire film was based around lol

  3. Incredible climbing, and fantastic images. All together makes this documentary a marvel. Thank you for sharing this incredible experience. All my respect for these two masters

  4. Herzliche Gratulation!
Das war eine echt tolle Leistung von euch!
Danke für euren Film und eure persönlichen Eindrücke!
Berg Heil und schöne Grüße aus 🇦🇹 (Austria)!

  5. Watch his facial expressions, so similar to Alex H. Two world class climbers with similarities, not to surprising. Great doc.

  6. I cant tell you how much better this is than "influencer content". Real is better every time…nice work

  7. I dont climb, never have climbed anything other than a tree. For some reason i CONTINUE to find myself transfixed and absolutely mesmerized by climbing vids. I dont kno why climbing vids are so mind boggling and gorgeous to me but i really appreciate the beauty that is being shared, i truly do.. I think maybe i was a climber in a former life… Anyway, thank you, very beautiful great video. This was very enjoyable to watch.

  8. "I guess it's pretty important that we see our families huh" I felt that. The ice roof bivvy and climb… Out of this world!

  9. This is the climb where they edited out two other climbers that did their own climb and arrived at the summit at the same time as Josh and Vince. Very weird how they did all this and didnt even mention it.

  10. I met Vince in the early 90’s in Crested Butte Co.

We gave him the nickname “invincible”.

I’m not much of a climber, but I’ve put more laps in the BLACK CANYON with a kayak than anyone. Any climbing that I have done was in the BLACK via kayak.

I recognized him instantly, glad he’s getting it

  11. Never heard of Wharton? hes been crushing insane routes for like 20 years. Maybe yound people today haven't, but anyone whos been around for a while knows of him.

  12. Great video. I was thinking that they were going up the hard way and from the top there would be an easy backside to safely go down. But I didn't see any easy way down from the top.

  13. Wow! What a climb!! Congrats to both! And to the filming crew. Best mountaineering I've seen since The Alpinist

  14. "Great content, thanks! I recommend everybody read the story of Vince and Steve climbing the Rupal Face in Steve's book. Unbelievable achievement!"
