I used this method exclusively and rarely did I pull off the tail. I’ve never hunted or processed game before last year, that being said, it’s not hard. A great method!
i always rip the fucker in half
I wish this worked.
i seem to not have good luck with game shears. so many are so cheap and do not last. what brand of shears do you use? Thanks
Great presentation Kevin and Steve!
Me and pop do the same thing except we have trotline with slipknots that we use to hang them by their back feet and pull down
What about the scent glands under the front legs? They can give it a nasty taste
Remember when my Pa (RIP) first showed me the “tail” method. Felt like a boy who just discovered fire for the first time! Lol. Remember also when my Dad and I were waiting a squirrel out that went into a hole in a tree trunk, and Pa (my Dad’s Dad) rode up on his tractor to see how we were doing. Told him about the squirrel we were waiting out, and he said, “Oh, boys… You don’t need to wait on him.” He then went over and yanked a briar twig out of the ground, walked over to the tree, stuck the briar twig in the hole, wiggled it around 2-3 seconds, pulled the squirrel out, smacked it’s head against the the tree with it tangled in the briar twig, then said, “Here’s your squirrel, son. Save the back meat for me when you get back to the house.” My mouth was literally dropped open for a good 5 seconds.
thank you.
I'm gone get me some city squirrel
Tail method I've learned but my dad always told me it was taking the "shirt and pants off" of the squirrel 😅
*and skin them when they are warm when possible*
Just do a horizontal cut on the stomach..then grab the top of the cut with your left hand and pull towards the head..and grab the bottom part of the cut with your right hand and pull to the rear..doing both pulls at the same time
..and the hide is off..just use a knife not shears..find the joint so you don't have any splinted bones when taking the legs and neck off..
My grand mother did the whole process..just using her finger nail to poke a staring hole in the belly..and twisting the legs ,head and tail off.with out using a knife ( she weight 96 lbs and still did it when she was over hundred in age ) ).I never time her but it was probably under 10 seconds..skinned , gutted and quarter in 5 pieces..
Come on meat eater..You make stuff too complicated..
Save that for something hard to do.. like your taxes..ffs.
No reason you can't skin and butcher any animal north American snimal with just a 3 inch pocket knife..all my relatives do..and they would laugh their asses off if I pulled out shears.. 😂ask me if I was going to make a dress..ffs.
Also we kill our animals instantly with one shot in the head or neck depending on how close the animal is..on a farther shot we go for the neck shot..we don't double lung them..like a bow hunter as you do when you rifle hunt..that makes no sense all.
meat taste better if the animal instantly dies and is bled out by cutting the neck and put with the head laying down hill ..not after it runs a couple hundred yards or more..who doesn't know that ??. When in doubt ask a butcher..get ready thou for him to ask if you stupid or not.
Time to go back and use skill and sound judgement..learn bullet placement..I kill more animals in Alaska with my 22-250 and 243..
My 22-250 killed a 600 plus black bear..with a 20 6/8th skull last year .the hide was close to 2 inches thick around it's neck..I just shot it in the back of head..and it instantly was dead..with the 55 grain bullet.
One more time…Let's go back to using skill..and bullet placement.
I have two 338 win mags…nice shooters.but 22-250 bullets are cheaper..if I was taking 700 yard shoots I would pull them out. Moth balls.
The whole meater eater channel is getting too yuppy.for alot of us.
Thou I got to say Kimi Werner still keeps it real..and she can cook..which is something Steve will never be accused of..
Lots of us Love our wild meat but most of us let it cool downatleast over night before we eat it …
unless we are starving….
If you need lessens I live around Thorne bay..hopefully you can keep up with a 64 year old..we all have to learn..some of us just learned earlier..than others..and some latter…and dome try to reinvent the wheel ?? 🤔
Cheers from POW.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13)
I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:5)
The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in all his works. The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them. The LORD preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy. (Psalms 145:17-20)
Any time I need hunting tips I’m come straight here
I was always taught to remove the lymph nodes located at bends of the legs
Every time i try this method the damn tail rips off.
how to catch a squire, go to mcdonalds, get a large ice cream in a large cup with a dome lid that has a large hole in it, eat the ice cream but leave a small amount in bottom, then place cup near victims home, use three stick in the ground to souround the cip so it caint move, then sit n wait.. in florida ive release a few caught by accident trash left behind by kids . but does work.. if in a pinch for meat and no weapons..
What about the tenderloin
Thanks guys now me and my dad can go squirrel hunting and actually eat it
Thanks🙂, I haven’t skinned a squirrel since 1976 and I wasn’t that good at it. Looks like I going to take it up again
did he cut below the anus? or above?
Nice. So you have a quick method of cleaning a squirrel. What's next? I'll tell ya: A hunk of meat not fit for human consumption 50% of the time. What YouTube folks won't tell you is that squirrel meat ranks in the top 5 toughest, most leathery meats of all wild game. If you're lucky enough to shoot some younger females or adolescent males you can make darn good fare out of it. But a 2+ year old male? The muscles are incased in a membrane WAY tougher than shoe leather. It's almost identical to rubber. No one on YouTube will tell you this, so when you cook your squirrels you'll think you did something wrong. You didn't. You have to either parboil the pieces for 2+ hours or pressure cook for 30 minutes. Then you might still have to take a razor sharp knife and spend 10 minutes per squirrel carving off the super-glue-like membranes. Anyone who tells you different is either lying or they haven't done it. I LOVE squirrel, but it's one heck of an investment in time and effort.
Tysm 😊 🙏
Anyone else notice or feel if you master squirrel hunting/ sitting and waiting for one ……….spotting deer comes alot easier
I wanna see a show about small game with Kevin Murphy as the host
Not much different from de-suiting a rabbit, really. Could skip the tail and just pull from a slit in the belly.
I’ve cleaned a lot of squirrels and this taught me some tricks! I was surprised he didn’t’ show removing that gland under the front arm’s though – you don’t want to eat that.
Sweet!
Incentive to head shoot all squirrels. Which is also fantastic shooting practice.
It feels right watching this kind of content, it's like remembering a piece of me I forgot I had. This is so educational to me, I'm Australian, I don't know anyone who goes hunting or can take me along and just having these instructional videos available is such an amazing and invaluable resource to me so cheers mate. The only animals I've cleaned and gutted are fish and same thing, learnt everything i know about fishing on youtube because no one in my family does that either.
Squirrel Brean is better than the whole Squirrel
Small meat and you have to shoot them in the head. Put out a bird feeder and you can fill your fridge!
Ive always done the cut on the middle of the squirrel at the spin. Put two fingers in and pull apart. Has always worked great for me. Ill have to try this way next time.
The skin is tasty, we burnt the fur and cook with the skin
Well done gentlemen..!
I don’t get it, why cut away the rib and flap meat? It won’t necessarily fill you up but the taste and texture is really good. I don’t fry squirrels. I braise usually with onions and white wine.
It's september…time to re-watch your vid so I can re-remember how to do this !
The tail pulled off
I've been squirrel hunting since i was 8 and i can tell you that you really do need that first cut to work. That first cut is crucial. Best way to clean a squirrel but if you mess it up it gets so frustrating.
Being a fly tier, when I came across a roadkill, I usually put it in a bag or cardboard box, whatever I have in my car and skin it at home in 30 minutes. Now, I know why I need a good cutter in the car :)) Thanks guys!
Best method I have seen this far. Steve I’m ready for some new seasons of meat eater. I have watched them all and really enjoyed them and learned a lot. Even bought your game cook book lol
Do you make the first cut below or above the anus??
Thank you
Is it necessary to remove glands from a squirrel? I never have done that
See guys, he doesn’t do any personal lecturing; he gets down to business. Stop lecturing and trying to entertain. Just STOP!!! Nobody likes that.
Proof yt is pure evil. 😂
This video. Beside a video about poor peanut the squirrel… Timing??!!
Phucks sake, the algorithm is broken 😢❤
