Alex Ovechkin keeps making history as he chases it.
The Russian legend scored in overtime to secure the Capitals a 1-0 win over the Senators, his 179th goal on a different goaltender, surpassing Jaromir Jagr for the most in NHL history.
The shot was Ovechkin’s 13th overtime goal on the road, passing Jagr and John Tavares for the most ever, and his 27th overtime game-winner, extending his own record. Sidney Crosby is second with 22.
Ovechkin now has 874 goals, 21 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record.
He 16 games at the end of 2024 with a broken fibula, but scored four goals in five games upon his return.
Ovechkin recently scored his 20th goal of the season, joining Gordie Howe as the only players in history with 20 goals in 20 straight seasons.
