The Edmonton Oilers need to call up a young netminder, while also considering upgrading at the NHL Trade Deadline. The future in net is certain with at least Stuart Skinner, but who else could solidify a tandem?

Here we go again! The Oilers lay an egg in Pittsburgh and youtube Oiler GM's say "Oh well, bad night." The Oilers lay a second egg with Pickard in net and it's time to grab the pitchforks and torches and force a trade for another goaltender. Or call up Rodrigue from Bakersfield.
Call up Rodrigue. Lets think about how that might work out. The current cap space for Edmonton is $456,859. Rodrigue makes $775,000 on a call up. That means someone is going on waivers, who? Name the player you want to risk giving up. Calling up Rodrigue will likely mean Pickard goes on the waiver wire. Do you think he'd clear, I don't. Now you'd better hope Rodrigue is the second coming of Ken Dryden or you're in trouble.
But Pickard only plays against Non playoff teams. Name a backup that doesn't! I'd add that Skinner has been in net for a 5-3 loss to Pittsburgh, a 6-1 loss to Columbus and a 4-1 loss to Calgary, all non playoff teams. Both Skinner and Pickard have similar GAA as well as save %. Usually when one is better than the other this stat is markedly different. as you see in Tampa Bay with Vasilevskiy and Johansson. This would indicate that it's more likely a team defense issue than a goaltending issue.
Value for the dollar. Skinner is your starter, your not trading him so let's move on to Pickard. Pickard currently has roughly the same GAA/save % as Swayman, Korpisalo and Vladar to name a few. However their salaries are 8.2 million, 4 million and 2.7 million respectively. In my armchair GM book that's a bargan!
Trade for Gibson. Even at half salary Gibson comes in over 3 million. Once again, who goes on waivers? Even if Pickard goes the other way in the trade you still have to dump 2 million, does that improve the team?
Gibsons contract once obtained is just like Campbells was. No other team will take it without lots of incentive!
Finally, after your season is done you still have to sign McDavid and Bouchard, Think about Cal Pickard putting up good numbers as a backup for 1 million or someone else putting up the same numbers playing the same teams for twice as much.
Dance with the one you brung to the barn.
We have two sides here. Those who love Skinner and those who know we need a better goalie to win the cup which includes beating Winnipeg, Vegas and now LA. The fact that the goalie coach, who should have been fired and upgraded years ago does not help either, which is why Dubnyk succeeded in Minn. Unfortunately, the final say comes down to the bowman/jackson massacre team, which means nothing will change or it will get worse. So like it or not, we are stuck with Skinner and Pick and likely no stanley in Edmonton. Gibson better than Skin but not good enough. I still can't believe Holland didn't get Hollybuck from Win when he had the chance. So in the end, the oilers are doomed and this is before the big payout to mcd and bouchard.
I would have rode Pickard in the last years playoffs after Canucks series and maybe more games he'd be the guy this year
Watching the last two games—and watching over and over again how teams tend to "out goalie" our high-powered offense leads me to believe that the Oil should be bringing in another goalie that matches our defensive systems. Can't imagine any of our goalies going through McDrai every practice without getting better. Maybe someone can tell me where Mike Smith fits in because Skinner's style obviously is looking much like [edit] him this season…. I'm thinking mgmt is going to look at a goalie to carry this team to the cup.
My prediction is : Veteran Goalie + Philadelphia defender + Columbus forward.
My wish is Mat Olivier from Columbus as well—which stops being out-hit every night! And no one's taking a run at our goalies. Book it!!
Great job Dolynny!!!! look at the comments lol
Ah yes what we need is the spend twice as much as our current tandem on one goalie with a higher GAA and barely better sv% that's 5 years older than our current starter. Oh and somehow make that work under the cap for 2 more years. Stu and Picks are our playoff duo and that's not changing. Our #1 priority should be a stay at home right shot defenseman. That is the only hole this team has right now as far as I'm concerned. I'm honestly tired of hearing how Stu isn't a good goalie when it's his 3rd NHL season. Blaming the goalie is the lazy choice. Look deeper. Rodrigue needs another season in Bako before he can get some rotation as the backup.
Skinner let a terrible gwg in game 7. That was a terrible goal and cost them the cup at 1-1 who knows, whole different game
Nice to see you Tyson. Happy New Year. Maybe a 3 goalie rotation would be better. Vegas did well with a 3 goalies rotation….inevitably one will get hot….
Stu is still King however….
Oilers need someone who moves the puck and smashes people on the right side second pairing….
Made er how far last season with the current set up..rocky road yes rolling the dice is probly not the best idea,
At least the Oilers have a young goalie in the minors who may be ready to get some NHL regular-season starts. It may be Rodrigue should this season get some NHL starts because who knows what will happen to Stu Skinner or Cal Pickard down the road? At least Skinner and Pickard have managed to stay healthy, something that so far this season the Canucks, Leafs and Sens, with respective injury stints with Thatcher Demko, Anthony Stolarz and Linus Ullmark, haven’t been as lucky with. The Habs, after Cayden Primeau had allowed multiple goals in multiple games and had put up a sub-85.0 save % this regular season, called up Jakub Dobeš from the AHL, with Primeau having cleared waivers back down to the AHL.
What you have to ask yourself is….will Gibson bring more to the team than a 2nd pairing D-man? I'd be fishing for the 4th/5th D-man and a more consistent depth goalie (the goalie just to get through this playoff). With about 5 mil accrued, it could be possible. Not sure what assets will go the other way though. Maybe Buffalo will do a deal for Byram and Reimer? Or Quick and Miller from NYR.
straight up NO to Gibson
Why is it that you don’t seem to get that Gibson’s been a trade piece for several years in a row yet no one is ever desperate enough to trade for his contract. So many teams have been desperate for goaltending yet somehow he STILL plays for Anaheim. Enough with the fantasy. Not touching him with a 10ft pole even @ half retained
THERE ARE 5 Other PLAYERS THE INCOMING PLAY HAS TO PASS.
TOO MANY DEFENSE MEN PUCK CHASING AND SCREENING AND CROWDING GOALIE .
+ NO MATTER WH Is IN NET, UNTIL DEFENSE SMARTENING UP, IT WON'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE PERIOD
The fact people know the defense is a problem, yet so many outright avoid the elephant on the ice ( the Nurse issues ) , however no one says what we all know the solution that needs to take place.
Instead they search for other defense men to add, when ,
"UNTIL NURSE AND CURRENT OILERS ACTIVE LINES OF DEFENSE MEN ARE FORCED TO SEE AND CHANGE THEIR CONSTANT BAD HABITS THAT GET REPEATED.
BECAUSE NO ONE CALLS THAT STUPIDITY OUT , IN ORDER TO IMPROVE, THEY MUST CHANGE THEIR DEFAULT HABITS IN TRADE FOR BETTER TRAINING AND STRATEGIC PLAYING.
TO SHUT DOWN INCOMING RUSHES AND KEEP THEM THE HELL OUT OF THE CREASE AND LINE OF SIGHT For The GOALIE. THAT WAY THE GOAL TENDER CAN DO HIS BEST TO STOP ANY SHOTS DIRECTED AT THE NET.
UNTIL THEY ALL GET THAT DRILLED INTO THEIR BRAINS , WONT MATTER WHO COMES IN OR REPLACES WHO. IT WON'T BE ANY DIFFERENT TILL THEY ALL REALIZE THAT WHAT MUST GET BETTER ON EVERY DEFENSIVE LINE PAIRING. OR NOTHING WILL CHANGE PERIOD.
Just imagine how much more confident the Oilers would be if they had a lights out goalie in the net. I like Skinner but he’s just a decent backup right now.
I agree Rodrigue needs a look. As far as timing though? I'd say, plant the seed now for later. But that shouldn't be necessary. Regardless he's only 11 and 7 right now with a .914. I'd hardly call that worthy of an invitation to the party. As to Gibson. I've been a Gibson fan for a long time. Starting with his first 40 game season he's faced an average of 30 shots a game over his carrier. While year over year his team deteriorated in front of him. He still maintained a very respectable GAA. All things considered. On the surface he looks like a goalie approaching the waning side of prime. One that thrives on rubber and has something to prove. I suspect he would push Skinner and be a definite upgrade over Pickard. As long as he knows he's coming in as the 1B . Right now the Oil's goaltending tandem knows it's role and each is comfortable in his place. Putting two starters in the same room isn't always a good idea. We haven't forgotten that last year when we needed him most Pickard was lights out. Just sayin.
Skinner is not a number 1 goalie oilers needs a number 1 goaltender
Sorry, I don’t see Gibson as the answer. A top 4 D-man is more of a need. That potential D-man may help in steadying the defence, which constantly breaks down in coverage. Crap coverage = Grade A scoring chances.
Why do some people not want to admit that we have some shaky goaltending more often then not!…we are lucky we can score a lot because if we don’t score at least 3 goals we very seldom win the game!
With mediocre goaltending😂, the Oilers must control the puck better in their zone.
