Caught this one early
I think if he had said he wanted to go. He would have been traded to a team he didn't want to go to. Instead he played the game and got to a team he wanted. Frankly, he was smart for playing the deal as he did. Sure. The islanders will hate him, but he now gets to be what he wanted. A leaf.
As a Leafs fan, I am glad we got the chance to sign him, but I can understand why Islanders fans would be pissed at him. It's kind of insane that they are still so furious with him, but I sort of admire their passion.
I think ultimately he did what was right for him, but objectively I can see why they were and are so upset. Well, maybe not still. But the chants of "WE DON'T NEED YOU" almost 8 years later kind of make me laugh. They are not a fanbase to be fucked with. Hah
I am a Leaf's fan. I can completely understand why Islanders fans hate this man. He misled them into thinking he was going to resign, and ended up leaving and signing with another team. He should've told them earlier so they could trade him as a deadline rental and get assets. And the cherry on top is the social media post of him in his PJs… as if it was in the back of his mind all along
2:18 respect for saying ON Long Island and not in long island like most people incorrectly say.
I don’t think he intentionally screwed them , had he said he wanted to leave on trade , he wouldn’t of had all the options on the table , Leafs probably wouldn’t have traded for him , they just wanted to sign him and add to the team without breaking anything significant , therefore free agency gave him more options , it was a selfish career move that most players in that situation would have done . I can’t hold that against him . If i had the chance to play for my childhood team , close to home , it be a no brainer . NY fans needs to understand that
