Wedgewood injury, Benson goal – Tough Call Review

Scott Wedgewood was injured by his own player, and Buffalo took advantage. I don’t think the officials did anything wrong here.

  1. Driving the playing into the net?? Benson was headed for the crease the whole time. Bit of an overstatement.
My biggest gripe is that had this been an out-player going down, we have seen time and time again the refs are early with the whistle. This official was standing on the net and chose to ignore the goalie writhing in the net. If they cannot be at all consistent, I am going to call the refs poor. And NHL refs are terrible on a regular basis.

  2. I guess the lesson is that when a goalie gets hurt, they better be able to rip their mask off to get the ref to do their job.

  3. Maybe it was the right call, but I agree with Bender here, the rule should be changed.
If there is an immediate scoring chance, they should let the play continue, but that puck was going into the corner behind the net, so blow the play dead.
With controversial situations like this, I always asked myself how I would feel if a goal like that would decide game 7 of the Stanley cup finals in OT where I'm not really rooting for any team and in this case, I would not be happy about it.

  4. I agree on that too many defenders push their opponent onto their own goalie and still get upset about it. Like WTF you yourself caused that and now you want to manhandle your opponent because your own stupidity

  5. I can respect that the Avs player helped Benson go down, but Benson did enter the crease on his own to begin with. That aside, with an obvious injury and no immediate scoring chance with the puck headed to the corner, I feel like it should have been blown dead. Like Bednar said, if that goes to the point and a 100mph clapper comes in, Wedgewood is going to get hurt even worse.
