What was your takeaway from Kent Hughes’ mid-season presser?

What was your takeaway from Kent Hughes’ comments? Do you see an Elias Pettersson and/or J.T. Miller deal happening quickly? How desperate is it getting for the Rangers? Are the Canucks and Rick Tocchet talking about an extension? Are you hearing if Auston Matthews will play in the 4 Nations Face-Off? TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun joins SC with Jay Onrait to discuss.

  1. how many bad contracts the habs have been struggling with? they just signed a big one with Slavkosky and the young big player has not shown his real value yet. the second half of last year season he shown sparks of it yes. in the case of Jake evens the player is having the best season of his career yes. But even though i like Jake Evens i think the Habs must not over pay him. This probably means ? Jake will go for the biggest offer he can get to secure his future and his family's future. player agents need there cut also and this is one of the factors that the contracts have become what they now are? If we go by the rules of managing a NHL hockey team sport logic says Evens could be trated for a good value that could help the Canadiens down the road either in another trade for a veteran player who knows.?

  2. I just wanted to see a return of investment of my time in watching 75 or so games I’ll watch this season. Won or lose recently – they are exciting to watch

  3. my Flyers are basically in the same category. I can assure you though, the Habs management should NOT make a single move other than sell at the deadline. or leave your team in place and se if they can get to the playoffs. you do NOT give up assets for a playoff run with no chance to win a SC

  4. I believe they should stay the course of rebuilding. This is not the time to change that. Sure if they can add without trading away a key player and it doesn't affect the cap too much go ahead but realistically that won't happen. They should see what they can get for their free agents(i.e.: Savard, Dvorak and Armia) , make an offer to Evans that works for the team if he doesn't accept it then try to trade him before losing him for nothing. Maybe even offer a reduced contract to Armia if he's interested. As much as we fans wants to see the habs succeed in the playoffs, this will not be the year. Stay the course! Let the young players take over the team.

  5. Happy with everything Hughes has said. I trust this management team. I'd be content to just watch this version of the Habs team play it out for the year and see what happens. Obviously a lot can change between now and March, but either way they go, just don't turn into 'buyers'.

  6. Hearing what HUGHES had to say was pretty much exactly what I wanted to hear. "Pump the brakes", "Curb your enthusiasm"…etc. (I'm paraphrasing) But anyone who thinks MTL should get into trade talks as buyers are completely out of focus of what we've been going through the past couple years. They reach a final WC spot for a few days and people are talking about Elias Pettersson and such. It's downright crazy!
Put it this way. Do you want MTL to trade young talents and picks to do everything to make the playoffs this year? Or stick to the plan and develop the players drafted and still in the pipeline…etc, so they can become a UNIT and make the playoffs year after year for a long long time?
Seriously, everytime I hear Pettersson's name brought up with the HABS I feel like pulling my hair out.

  7. Hughes will make a move (or not do a thing) if he gets his perfect opportunity … he did that with Carrier and Laine… why would he do anything diff?

  8. If we were just slightly better than absolute garbage in the first 30 games of the season we'd comfortably be 3rd in the division and only a few points behind Florida. Dumping Primeau was the right choice, assuming Dobes is the real deal and doesn't turn out to be even worse somehow, but he's going to need to start getting a lot more starts. I don't think our scoring can be this hot for another 42 games, and since Monty is the only player on the team still playing as bad as he did in the first two months of the season, we're not going to win as many games if we're giving up 3-4 goals every night. A deep playoff run with a 3.00 GAA and .900 SV% goalie is completely out of the question.

  9. Stay on plan. Adding Carrier was already a really nice get: offload a struggling prospect that didn't work out to a team that's in a weird spot for a proper ready-to-go NHL defenseman that can eat minutes and give the kids room to breathe. Let them keep developing and figuring things out and their own internal growth will have them land where they land.

That said: if there's a hockey deal to be made or someone wants to pay a generous price for a non-core player you have to consider those as they come.

  10. Habs need to find a way to keep Armia and Evans : that line has been key in the latest winstreak and would be amazing in the playoffs
