I like Rathbone’s game more then Juolevi’s therefore I would love to have Rathbone in the lineup
I think the decision will come after the training camp. What i seen joulevi is better defensive and rathbone better offensive but i havent seen enough. Defence comes first in 3rd pairing is my guess. Rafferty and chatfield will have an intresting fight aswell. Maybe sautner aswell if they isnt ready.

Honestly, the back end is anybody guess, however I think they're under the gun a little bit with Juolevi because they need to see what he has before expansion time. He's been with the organization for awhile now. Drafted over 4 years back now. After this one will be 5 seasons with the organization and nobody really knows his value in a trade either. Unless someone else comes in and blows the doors off, that 5-6 spot on the left side will likely be his.
I won't be perfectly satisfied until we can manage to find an elite defensive defenseman. I know we have Woo and Jurmo coming up, not to mention possibly Tryamkin, but I want a truly elite right handed defender who's only job is to clog the slot and skate well. I'd say Myers, but he's not elite caliber and he pinches too much for what I'm describing.
Agreed with your order for these 4 (Juolevi, if anything to see what we have given his draft pedigree and potential; Rafferty given how he's one of the older ones and an AHL all star, gotta see what we have; then Rathbone if he earns a spot, and Chatfield if we need more defense). If Sautner or Brisebois can play right side I'd consider them too but pair any of them with Benn would be my first choice (unless they earn a spot).
Rathbone is always over looked and is Vancouver's most underrated prospect! I believe he will beat out Joulevi and I believe that Rafferty will win that RHD position as well!

What worries me is that we are looking at our defense like "top pair, 2nd pair, Benn and unproven rookie", and that is assuming zero injuries. Worried about depth and contingencies down back?

I think the ship has sailed on Juolevi being a top-pairing guy. But if he can be a solid / reliable / serviceable 2nd or 3rd pairing guy for years to come you have to consider it a win at this point. Really excited to see what Rathbone can do, I have a hunch he's gonna delight the fans.
Juolevi is a lock for next because he was a first round pick and we must give him that chance. His hockey IQ is 10/10 for a defence man and his break out passing is what you need intros game. Juolevi is best D-man to break into the roster. Having Juolevi and Hughes will be a gift to watch. So many teams put all they're chips into forwards and not defence.
