This should make the NHL nervous…

Frank Vatrano is staying in Anaheim! 🎉 The Ducks locked him up with a creative 3-year, $18 million extension that includes deferred salary—$3M annually now and $900K per year starting in 2035. This deal lowers his cap hit to $4.57M, giving the Ducks much-needed flexibility to secure their rising stars while setting Frankie up for a secure future post-retirement. Deferred deals like this are rare in hockey but could become a trend as teams navigate the salary cap. This should make the NHL nervous… Props to Pat Verbeek for this smart move—perfect for both sides and a big win for Anaheim! 🦆 #GoDucks #anaheimducks #frankvatrano #nhl #hockey

  1. We may have high taxes but at least we have palm trees. Some teams don't even have that.

  2. There's a new force in the Pacific, and it's not Godzilla! As an Oilers fan, I'm not gonna lie. Makes me nervous.

  3. Love that Vatrano is with the team for three more years! This is also signaling to the league that the re-build is just about done. There still will probably be one more top ten (or close to it) pick coming up. That's fine. Any team can always use one of those and it will help futureproof the Ducks even more. They are surging right now and looking great, but the playoffs may still be one more season away. We'll see! Go Ducks!

  4. And he celebrated that contract with a 3 point night.
Maybe they should try extending McT next

  5. You make the deal sound so sweet but being an older British guy I've come to think Life is never as described . Attempting to be an Oracle especially with money & the world outlook is never too simple, but Hell I'll play along cos who doesn't love Frankie?

  6. "I don't think we have to worry about those Franky trade rumors anytime soon" Well not we just get to hear more Z trade rumors.

  7. I am much older than Frank but I did see the high school team he played for , well before he was there, and they were GREAT. Maybe the same coach that helped his career? Anyways, nice to see his success because they were so good it was unforgettable to see them.

  8. So glad Frank the Tank is here to stay! Go ducks!

P.s. amazing game last night! 4-1 make me smile. I was praying so hard for Gibby. Lol.

  9. Taxes aren't the circumstantial factor that determines where players want to go and play at though. It's winning. Players want to go to playoff bound teams. Edmontonis an attractive FA destination despite Canadian taxes. They wanted to go to Boston and the Rangers. When the Ducks, Sharks, and Kings were competitive, players wanted to come to California despite the high taxes and high cost of living.

  10. Slight overpay in salary but the deferment makes it a tolerable cap hit that shouldn't hurt the team.

  11. For someone who is a New Orleans Saints fan and Mickey Loomis the owner does A LOT of deferred contracts, I get where PV is going with this. This might be a new trend going forward for the NHL. Overpay yes, but the cap hit is better. More room to hopefully sign and resign players.

Now don’t do what Loomis is doing now, just deferring contracts like money in a fire pit that would just go to cap hell 😐

  12. The cap hit carries onto Anaheim no matter what team vatrano is on fyi. Thats what happens when you do that with contracts. Its a deal specifically signed with anaheim ….so even if hes traded….. its still anaheim that pays him in 2035 NOT the team that he hypothetically got traded to.

  13. I'm really happy for Frankie, he's one of my favorites.

Also, I hope McJesus leaves Edmonton and comes to Anaheim. Imagine that. LOL!

  14. I appreciate the warning it was AI generated, but it still bothers me to have a sound clip of the players words that isn’t the real instance. I hope this doesn’t become a standard journalistic practice across all news outlets. I like your breakdown of the deal and the long term outlook.

  15. LET'S GO DUCKS !!they won yesterday at Honda center!!! 🪿🖤🧡🖤🧡🪿🪿🥅🏒

  16. They have to do this to level the playing field even with states without an income tax to limit/eliminate "destination teams," which are currently the Nashville Preds, Las Vegas Golden Knights, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Florida Panthers. I think it is important to change the rules to have a certain percent deferred salary against the cap hit or to have it all as a cap hit. The NHL has the onus to make the cap system universally applicable and fair. Not addressing the destination teams for tax purposes is more of a problem in my eyes than letting this workaround slide. If the base salary matches league comparables +/- 5-10% then there should be no issue in my opinion.

  17. This only works if he pans out. Don't think the NHL is nervous about the 25th placed Ducks. A team whose Leadership under Getzy and Perry didn't even win a Cup during their reign. This team will be rebuilding for a longwhile unless their young talent is able to pay off.
