Adding to what? Fire sale!
Personally, I think they should ride it out. I went into the start of the season expecting them not to make the playoffs, and that expectation still holds today. I think Conroy’s on the right track with developing young talent, and the team should continue to develop them, not trade away promising prospects.
The Flames need someone who can score goals right now. No team in the league will ever trade away a player that can do that if they can help it unless it’s like a Matthew Tkachuk situation where he is up front in saying “once my contract is up, I’m gone, so trade me while you can and get something back for me.”
Is a first round playoff exit really that important? And what do you have to give up to get those 5 extra points?
We knew they were going to be right here at the beginning of the season. They need to trade for assets. Trade with a couple of other teams on the cusp and get some assets.
Neither. They should always be looking to upgrade their positions at a low cost while getting younger. The trade deadline has nothing to do with anything unless some buyer makes them an off er they cant refuse.
They should mostly ride it out, and probably sell Anderson if they get a great offer. Forget about the message to the team. You can't screw with your long term plans just to sell a temporary message to a locker room that might not even be around by the time your group evolves into an actual contender.
Every year people fall into the fallacy that teams like Utah, Ottawa, Chicago, SJS, Anaheim are all going to get better because they have all this amazing young talent. They don't, they have good young players but so do the Flames. The "everybody over 30 are horrible" people fail to see that you never play to be bad, you could get the 1st OA that is Nail Yakupov/RNH instead of the Connor McDavid or Matthews.
I would rather see the team work hard and be rewarded for their efforts. I am glad they pushed out all the old crew last year and acquired some young talent. They will be better for guys like Breut(can't spell the name), Parekh and 2 or 3 of the young defensemen they got last year plus any young forwards they can add this year.
Never go full Oilers or Sabres 10-12 years out of the playoff rebuilds.
Subtract. Get value for certain players, like Rasmus. This is a rebuild, not continuing the one and done playoffs
Subtracting
Should be subtracting plugs and filling in more kids to learn the position or filling in bad contracts
If you want to start dropping faster trade Anderson and retain 1/2 his salary making him a 2.25 million dollar add for a team which a lot of them can do right now or very soon. Having him at 2.25 for this year and next could almost put a team like Toronto or Edmonton into a can't miss situation. This is a HUGE gift to a team but I'd want nothing less than a #1 center prospect. Someone who is beyond just a late 1st round pick, someone who is guaranteed to be on the #1 line with potential to be a franchise player but not a generational talent. Looking at a top 1-5 ish type of pick here or a 1st round pick who has turned out to be better than expected. I'd even throw in a 2nd round pick.
At the cap floor so cant really sell. Eberything we wre doing is getting our younger guys more experience amd value to give us more options later. Overpreforming at capfloor with rookies and a small number of vets is not a repeat of last year underpreforming near max cap with a ton of vets
Could look a lot different come February 15th …….
Flames are in a great spot and it looks like they will finish 11 and up so the pick goes to the Habs.. I think if there's a player under 28 preferably a right shot centerman who can win faceoffs make the move but don't salvage all the picks we have left.. Conroy has been patient and handled this perfectly!! Go Flames Go!!
