The Detroit Red Wings closed out 2024 with a bang!
Tune in as we open by discussing Todd McLellan’s squads two wins to finish the year, starting with the victory over Alexander Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals including goals from Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane, and Lucas Raymond (4:25), as well as their New Year’s Eve win over sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins, including massive defensive plays from Moritz Seider and Simon Edvinsson, goals from Kane, Compher, as well as Dylan Larkin and Jonatan Berggren breaking their goal droughts (thanks to Raymond and Tarasenko), Alex Lyon’s back to back wins, 1st line Joe Veleno, McLellan’s 600th win as head coach, & more (11:15).
Next, we discuss whether Hockeytown’s hot streak is just a new coach bump or if this is sustainable, and whether Steve Yzerman should have fired Derek Lalonde sooner (18:50) before updates on Detroit’s previous free agent ventures in Steven Stamkos & others, as well as Ondrej Becher signing his ELC (27:10).
After that, a look at Red Wings prospects dominating the World Junior Championship, including Trey Augustine denying Canada, Axel Sandin Pellikka leading the Juniors in scoring, and Kiiskinen contributing for Finland, as well as a look on Canada’s disastrous tournament so far (30:55).
Finally, NHL news including Zibanejad and the New York Rangers cratering (44:30) before we take your questions & comments in our Overtime segment (52:35) – enjoy!

First
nashville dont have a guy to feed stampos one timers and vlad isnt a left wing
Finally some good things to discuss
Lalonde should have been gone towards the end last year. I’m so pleased with how the team is playing under Todd, but he’s obviously got his work cut out. I think the team struggles with conditioning issues. They seem to get gassed really quickly, which is partly Lalonde’s fault. One step at a time though.
I never got too excited about prospects over the years, but ASP is the only current player in our prospect pool that I’m confident will be an elite player. The young man reminds me of Makar light.
ohio state #1
gord miller: "canada has 10 different goalscorers!", yes gord, they all got one goal each, thanks gord.
james duthie: "canada has yet to allow a 5on5 goal!", yes james. yes.
Sorry Brad, I called bust on draft day… watched Zadina a lot in the Q… he failed the eye test big time.
Happy new years boyz! Great show…
Dialed in for tomorrow’s game. Also Congrats on the common law status… big step 😁✌🏾🍻
LGRW 🐙 🐙
Can seider get a new stick brand or model or something, he breaks sticks like nothing else
It definitely looks like the team is meshing better now that after a decade, we have a seasoned coach behind the bench
Great video again, unfortunately I don't think we will be bad enough to finally get a crazy good draft pick and if we are good enough to make playoffs I don't think we will be good enough to win much unless some roster moves are made to improve things now. I would of rather been bad this year and got a great pick and start expect more success once Danielson/ASP/Cossa/Augustine etc come in over the next 1-2 years.
Considering we ended this December on a high note how December was this December compared to other Decembers? On a scale of 1-10 😅
I caught JV making some nifty little passes. Was nice to see. He is better in tight space than i thought he was.
40:16 would listen more often if you guys talked about Canada like this all the time
Ordinary day was Canadas goal song last year and that is an absolute banger
Valeno looks great on the top line 🥂
Great show thanks gentleman!
Another year, yet I still listen. Thanks for everything, guys. I actually remember the Hughes discussions on the pod leading up to the draft. How far y'all have come, incredible.
Fun fact. After Ron Artest tried to start a riot at the Palace, the NBA immediately adopted the league's most severe alcohol policy. That policy was the Palace's.
One thing I've loved about this podcast since the early days in Brad's basement is how little it's changed and what has changed was improvement on things that were already good. It's been consistent, quality content that's become more polished over time and is now one of the best podcasts in my lineup, drunk Ryan edits aside. Keep up the good work, guys and happy New Year! LGRW!
Best Christmas gift I got, the Wings are watchable again.
The Yakemchuk and Parekh “likes” of posts about the loss to Latvia on socials was epic trolling.
Kiiskinen future 4th liner … yay … at that point take advantage of his hot play and use him in a big trade
Im liking the line of raymond larkin veleno
I was one of the very few who was actually kind of upset about Zadina over Hughes. I didn't think either would be bad, but I was SUCH a homer for the U-Mich kid.
