On December 28, 2024, the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New Jersey Devils 5-2 in a game that saw some heated moments. The main talking point came in the third period when Erik Haula delivered a big hit on Dmitry Orlov. Orlov got up, went to the bench, and then returned to challenge Haula, leading to both players being assessed 2-minute minors for roughing. Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe was visibly furious with the call, expressing his frustration with the referees throughout the game.
Keefe’s anger was a central part of the post-game discussion, as many felt the penalty affected the flow of the game. The Hurricanes capitalized on key power plays following the incident, securing the win. There was also a separate situation earlier in the game when Timo Meier received a game misconduct for a hit on Martin Nečas, but the focus remained on the roughing penalties and Keefe’s reaction to the officiating.

I think it was a legal hit. What Orlov did afterward was way worse. I think he should miss 3 games at least like rempe
Legal hit
Clean hit. Devils should have had a power play as a result even if they penalized the initial hit. You can’t just run from the penalty box and tackle dudes. These refs are clowns.
obvious penalty
Chased his head down. You can see him ignore the puck too
wtf is this commentary. Totally high targeted hit.
Floppers be flopping’
This commentary is trash
Haula elbowed Haula in the face! "Totally clean hit, maybe a little high"? Really? Asshat announcers couldn't call a neutral game if it smacked them in the nose with it's elbow, which they would be totally fine with…
Haula has been a douchebag since he got benched here, pouting like a little baby because we paid him millions and sat his ass. He's like 3 for 30 against us since then… hockey karma.
Way closer to a penalty than Timo's hit
Typical Ruzzian behaviour
