The Colorado Avalanche and Mackenzie Blackwood reached a deal on a 5 year extension worth $5.25 AAV. Is that too much or just right?
Either way, Blackwood followed up his extension with a stellar performance against the Utah Hockey Club in the Avs first game back following the Holiday break. Artturi Lehkonen also found his first hat trick of his career to lift the Avs to the 4-1 win.

To me, signing Blackwood right now is a foresight to Mikko. As in the Avs front office is changing their stance on goalie and instead of playing who’s gonna be goalie this year and what do we have to give up. What do we have to give up next year. We got our guy, sign him. Goalie done. Ok now, Mikko we know our cap, we know our core future besides you so now we can give you an exact number. I think this deal helps the Mikko contract than hurt it. P.s. Mikko is not going anywhere, there is no scenario where the Avs trade or let Mikko walk. Not gonna happen. This was a we need to fix our goaltending and we might have to spend $8 mil….nope 5.25 so ok now we can give Mikko 14
Absolutely shocked by the Nate fight. He isn’t too much of a fighter like that, so I’d love to know what that was all about. I was also stunned that Lehky is just now getting his first hat trick… Thought he got one last season. Love seeing him do so well. Having Blackwood has been such a boost and I’m excited to see how far he can go. Been watching him for a while and patiently waiting for him to make his way to us 😂 Also, imitation is the highest form of flattery. But in Utah’s case, just because you try to be us, doesn’t mean you will be 😂😂 We did it first! But keep trying 😂
In regards to the Mikko extension, Chris is right in that it that it could come together at any time. I think that the talks will really get under way after the CBA talks get started around the 4 nations tourney. The future of the salary cap will likely be decided and agreed upon by the owners and players before the trade deadline. Once they have a good idea of where the cap is going to be next year, Mikko's deal will fall in place. From everything i've heard, it sure seems like the cap will likely jump into the neighborhood of $97 mil next season with another big jump the following year which will allow them to slip the future highest paid player in the league Makar's new deal in without too much hassle. in short, i'm not going to start sweating the Mikko extension until after playoff spots are starting to be clinched.
Blackwood affordable extension that is tradable
Just give Mikko whatever he wants. We need him to win a few more cups. No questions about it.
What the Blackwood extension is a sign of is Stability. The dude is upbeat, a clear Team First guy, and great in the Locker Room. Mikko is gonna stay with stability. It's gonna happen, give it time Wedgewood will get a nice 2 year extension as well. Both guys are so upbeat! The Core is intact.
i dont think the Avs will sign Mikko until the salary cap is finally decided, and then we will get Mikkos version of a hometown discount and sign for the same percentage of the salary cap as Mackinnon when he signed his deal
Hopefully, Blackwood stays like that in the playoffs not like the guy in WPG. Negative comments about Georgiev just show how stupid some people are. I wish him all the best in San Jose and the rest of his career.
Chris MacFarland also got rid of Naz, Burky, and Erod. So far MacFarland has shown nothing! Only Stanley Cup wins count and he is at ZERO!
I don't think this is an overpay on Blackwood. With the cap going up so much and recent trends in the goalie market I don't think there are going to be many goalies of his skill level signing under 5 mil.
5 years at $5.25 Million for a guy who I think the team genuinely thinks is the best goaltender we've had since Varley at least. His numbers in San Jose and how he's played with us since the trade, I think this winds up being a good deal in that it's fair now and will age well, year by year.

The number makes sense to me. He was going to get more on the open market as he was set to be the best option as a free agent. The deal also puts him in the net until the end of the current core, and as a potential hand off to the rookie. I think if he played well the remainder of this year he could have been in the 6.5 range. Most importantly…..now that both tenders are signed for at least another full season can the avs please get them the right color gear? Pay the rush fee for them and get them in burgundy and blue
I feel like 5.25 isn’t bad considering how much he was going to be worth if he continues to play the way he has for the Avs. I think we will be looking at this contract as early as next year as a steal.
Depending on Landeskog though this will make the Avs have to most likely say goodbye to a defenseman
As a San Jose fan, I liked Blackwood a lot but felt his talent was being wasted on a rebuilding team and SJ has Askarov waiting to play. I am rooting for the Avs since they got 'Mack' in goal.
my money is on letting rants go he is too picky and i think he currently has an attitude and yes we are better off without him we could fill out our line up and actually free up our team from drama queens. the worst isnt that Rants stays on we dont win the cup and we dont keep him.
