Nhl hockey today – First month of the 2024-25 nhl season is in the books, and while you can’t put too much stock in the games and standings after october only, Alex ovechkin goals are back and that is great for fans of the record chase, but the washington capitals highlights showed again that the team itself looks great and it goes much deeper than just ovi . Canadiens vs capitals was another statement win for the caps and while ovechkin scored again, guys like connor mcmichael tom wilson dylan strome also showed why this team is so much more than just number 8. The rumors of Alex Ovechkin’s demise were greatly exaggerated.
You left off the Duhaime ,Raddysh, and Dowd line whose 5v5 numbers against top lines are off the charts! This is the fastest Caps team in 10 years. The Caps pick ups over the summer were all good additions.
they can still compete because the division is top heavy. and those teams are really good (when healthy). the Rangers have the best goalie, he literally stole the Sens game. the Devils if healthy can be a playoff team along with the Canes. but after that, it drops off
Sometimes you get lucky with the offseason adds actually being the right players, seems to be the case with Caps
The older guys have been stepping up but also the newer guys have been eager to prove themselves for the team which is a good sight to see we could still use a better power play but it’s still early for us to get better
seeing Ovy this fired up has been amazing. so happy for him. I was worried it was going to be 2 more years of caps struggles, while ovy pops in 20-25 goals over the next 2 seasons to retire. Of course that could still happen, but right now its nice to see him this happy. I think the small trip to the playoffs really helped the returnees. Just getting to the post season and playing in a series can really boost players confidence.
Caps will keep it up, pretty deep team with a coach that is turning Protas and the true McJesus into studs. When someone isnt rolling someone else usually is. Jakub Vrana is back too and even though he's in a limited third line role, hes been getting more PT and he fits this team well. (They're gonna trade Milano) This is a young fast team so I think the caps get the honor of second round losses again.
Finally someone is talking about the Caps! One of the teams that never gets attention from hockey media.
I think if they keep this up, Ovechkin breaks the goal record this season.
I think so far the second engine has been guys like chychrun and mcmichael
Dylan Strome. Another player that thrives after leaving the Blackhawks.
I think Charlie will regain the number 1, but the tandem pairing is working nicely so far. Yeah, two southpaws is pretty rare! Ovi seems rejuvenated with the new mix. They’re exciting to watch.
The Penguins should learn from this, this is how you build a round a Veteran player
I think the last time we saw a Southpaw goalie Tandem it goes back to 1969-70 when Detroit had Roger Crozier and Roy Edwards. It was a good tandem.
Didn't expect them to come out flying the way they have, but it's a welcome sight. Been a little bit worried about Ovechkin's scoring pace slowing down, because I really want to see him reach 895, 900 and beyond. Them winning the Cup a few years back was a huge relief, but it's still nice if they're doing well.
I'm sorry but I don't want Ovechkin to break the record.
I think the key of success of the Caps is Nic Dowd and the 4th line. They are so underrated but the work they provide is so important for the defense and the offense.
99 has more assists than anybody else has total points.
The greatest GOAT of all time.
Love see him win it again
8-2 now!
He has 13 points in 10 games.
Last season he didn’t get his 13th point until game #20.
Pretty strange how Americans worship a guy who supports the abduction and killing of Ukrainians.
Been a Caps fan since 1995 and the big difference this year is their intensity. Except for 2018 playoffs they've tended to be lackadaisical in many games during the Ovi era. Prior to the Cup win, it was somewhat of a joke among Caps that the team would just not show up for certain games, getting shut out in Game 7's and losing to 8 seeds in 1st round. But this year, especially in 1Q of NYR game and today's game, the intensity is off the charts. They just are swarming teams and giving them no quarter. Looks like a combo of good coaching and good mix of complimentary players, a lot of who got valuable time last year (Protas, McMichael) and are now starring. Ovi looked done last year in the playoffs. He now looks rejuvenated. He's gonna break the record this year, you can feel it.
This team is gross dude
Most goals after the age of 30:
1) Howe -383
2) Bucyk – 347
3) Ovechkin – 338
4) Esposito – 337
5) Ratelle – 311
6) Selanne – 305
7) Hull – 299 (Brett)
8) Messier – 280
9) Jagr – 265
10) Mullen – 258
All that renewed speed will be feeding OV many scoring opportunities. For those who don’t want him to break the goal scoring record we all know who the greatest Hockey Player of all time really is. It is Gretzky. But the greatest Goal Scorer of all time will be without a doubt Mr. Ovechkin. I’m certain Wayne would acknowledge that. In fact he is pulling for OV to do so.
Often times, what's not taken into consideration are the intangibles outside of hockey. In mid February last year, Ovi (my condolences) lost his father. Backstrom stepped away from the team in November of '23 and has not played since. Oshie was held together with tape and laces last year and has yet to play a game this season. The Caps' starting goaltender was replaced by their backup down the stretch and was inevitably swapped in the summer for Dubois. After being swept in the first round by the Rangers, it was this past off season that GM Chris Patrick/Brian MacLellan made several key moves to the Caps roster.
This 50th Anniversary team is akin to the "Island of Misfit Toys" insofar as picking up guys that – warranted or not – arguably didn't get much, if any, belief from their previous teams. Dubois, as mentioned, was traded after year one of an eight year contract. Jakub Vrana made the team via the Capitals camp on a professional tryout agreement. Former Knights net minder Logan Thompson wanted a chance to be a No. 1 goalie, but Vegas had other arrangements with Adin Hill. Chychrun. Roy. Mangiapane. Raddysh and Duhaime. The list goes on. These guys all have something to prove… and I haven't even got to that Ovechkin guy who so many had written off… but as any true Caps fan knows… Russian Machine Never Breaks (.com).
Huge credit also goes to head coach Spencer Carbery and his staff: Scott Allen. Mitch Love. Kirk Muller. This is a team that's unified. These boys are having fun out there. Each line plays as a five man unit and their captain is leading the way with a smile on his face that I haven't seen for years. Even with Roy and Chychrun out for the past few games, this team has rolled past their opponents. Now granted, it's still early in the season and with 72 games to go (at the time of this writing,) there's still a lot of hockey yet to be played. But for now? Don't sleep on the Caps.
Ovechkin absolutely destroyed the league in the second half of the season, hopefully he blows up again and beats the record
The caps looked at the pens and said "lets not do what they did"
If caps didnt have to play their AHL team during the playoffs last year, it wouldn't of been a sweep. So that's a hash analyst on the team that was rolling around 10 digits deep in AHL players. I thought the caps will do well this year, but probably not with a .800%. They are contenders though and Ovi can break the record. Just ride that same camel during the break.
As someone who hasn't missed more than a dozen games or so over the last ten years, it's just so refreshing to watch a fun and exciting brand of hockey. We finally have multiple lines with guys that have chemistry and are just flying around out there but with a purpose(cough Kuzy cough). Props to the front office and especially Coach Carbery! Can't wait to watch this team grow!
Doesnt matter, if they get into the playoffs, Ovi will stop trying.
I thought we would be better then last year but weve been way better then I expected early hopefully it lasts
I'm sure there has been one or two since then that I just can't think of off the top of brain but the last dual south paw tandem I can think of is Jose Theodore and Mathieu Garon for the Canadiens back in 03-04
Dubois who?
Update, Ovi is the NHLs first star of the week. All G all day long.
i dont get how they were one of the worst teams in scoring and now they are one of the best. wtf happened. ovi now has 10 goals in 14 games, and connor mcmichael has 10 goals in 14 games. Strome is filling the shoes of backstrom. This has to be GM and coach of the year. they've been working with young players, NHL outcasts, and old players for years now
go caps
