What has Zach Hyman done differently during recent scoring stretch?

TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SC with Jay Onrait to get his thoughts on the wild Stanley Cup Final rematch between the Oilers and Panthers on Monday night, and whether Zach Hyman has been doing anything differently lately that has helped him find the back of the net more often.

  1. Buttons nailed tis one bang on…. the Oil;ers knew they were putting themselves in a corner in the Goaltending Department when they moved on from Smith/Koskinnen….Zack Hyman has been listening to Moma2… and has been adjusting to the Coaches System tweaks….he has changed his positioning and his arrival times to better suit the moments and its paid off…. now he simply has to play through the discomfort of a messed up nose….no problems, he is dialed back in now and on his way to 40 goals. Just so we dont start working with excuses here….a really good NHL Coach can protect and hide an NHL Goalies faults and make him perform like a hero… but the System has to be dialed in correctly to do that…. instead of changing the System to support Skinner or any Goalie the Oilers chose to bring in the nit-wit Schwartz to screw with their Goalies beanbags and to make their lives even more difficult if thats even possible. So the Oilers deserve what they are getting because of the "shortcut" they tried using with Schwartz which has been consistently sinking their ship for years now. Schwartz is a regressive impact – like the absolute distraction that Mumford was…. just smoke and mirrors brought in to fool an astute Fanbase.

  2. We didn't win but Zac came back after that injury. That is amazing. Just amazing and motivating AF.

  3. I dont think they were that good defensively last night for the record yeah Stu wasn’t very good but the defence wasn’t good either

  4. 1:54 – Obviously Button didn't bother to watch the game. At least half of the goals happened due to poor defensive play and turnovers leaving Skinner out to dry. I don't see Button ragging Skinner in his previous 6 starts.

  5. It wasn’t skimmers fault they left him out to dry they got to caught up in the emotions if Florida lost, we’d be saying the same thing about Bubrofsky

  6. Ya Stu should’ve had two or three those but hf was Bouchard absolutely terrible. Worst game ever from him and he’s had a lot

  7. So what about Bob getting lit up for 5? Is he the issue on the Panthers? Panthers got shut out two games in a row lol Panthers kicked one in the net and got a lucky bounce on the 4-3 goal. Oilers were the better team for most of this game. Imagine when they get Arvidson and Kane back… Watch out

  8. Did Craig watch the game?!?

This loss was not on Stuart Skinner's back solely. In his last 10 games before last night .908 and a 2.1GAA. He consistently improves his game. Not sure how that constitutes as an inconsistent goalie!! After tonight he is still a .901 and a 2.77GAA 7 wins.

Goal 1 – Bouchard falls and gives up a break away. Yes you want your goalie to bail you out but the odds are against it
Goal 2 – Nurse gives up a PP and the D cannot clear, MT tips it in
Goal 3 – A fluke rebound floats over his shoulder, ya you want that one back but 9 out 10 times Stu stops that and the rebound goes away from the net
Goal 4 – Team stops playing over the cross check to Jeff Skinner, Bouchard again gives up the puck to a 2 on 1, Skinner has no chance of stopping
Goal 5 – Defense again loses the puck and a 1 and a million bounce off Stus head
Goal 6 – Defense again falls apart and leaving Carter alone at the hash and he burries it.

IMO Goals 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 are break downs in defense. You would want your goalie to bail you out on 2 of them. So Stu is on the hook for 2. Goal 3 is no ones fault just a bad bounce.

So if Stu saves 2 of the goals and the #3 bounces away that is still 3 goals that are a result of Defensive breakdowns.

I don't under stand hour Craig can say D and O and playing great and your goalie is not elite. Is Stu elite, not yet after just two full seasons at #1, he is top 5 in the league though. Like everyone Craig Button seems to want to jump on the blame the Goalie band wagon.

Edmonton's biggest issue which no one wants to call out is Defense. Both Nurse and Bouchard are constantly making mistakes and costing games. As soon as they score once all that is forgotten.

Sorry Craig but you are OUT IN LEFT FIELD bud, give your head shake!

  9. It’s insane how Team Canada didn’t pick him. The chemistry he has with skilled players is crazy. Hes still gonna score around 35 goals even with injury and a slow start

  10. Even though this game had defensive lapses from the oilers, all they’ve needed for the past few years is a goalie who is more stable in the net. Skinner has performed in big moments, but I wouldn’t say he’s stable and calm. His movements often look off when he’s under pressure and the oilers need stability. I think he would be a fantastic 30-35 game guy. I’m wondering how Gibson would fit on the oilers… maybe not a good fit with the money and he’s also had inconsistencies but that’s a guy who’s going to be eager to win and we know his ceiling is high. Just some thoughts
