I think another important factor is the manner it which you lose. Dustin Poirier has lost 3 title fights in his career, but he is still a fan favorite. The reason being that not only does he lose with grace, but he's always fights phenomenally even when he loses. It's evident every time he walks into the octagon that he is elite. All of Colby's recent L's have been lack luster performances on his part. This is a nail in the coffin for any fighter, whether baby-face or heel.
