He changed his mind because the player didn’t fall down entirely. This is part of the problem with nhl officiating. It’s too results-based. If a guy makes an illegal hit to the head but the other guy doesn’t get injured, there might not even be a pentalty on that play. This type of enforcement just encourages diving and embellishment.
I'm a Wings fan and the ref should NEVER put their arm back down and change their mind after calling a penalty. I have never seen this at any level. This would be outrageous for kid's house league, this the the freaking NHL. Refs have to be better than this.
I was there… philly got a really soft "Holding" make up call, minutes later. Was fun to see Torts have a hernia tho! Good win for the good guys. LGRW!!
We were once playing a pick up game on foot in my backyard 4 on 4 because we only had 8 guys, no goalies … the defensemen doubled as goalies whenever the action got too close to the net.
Anyway rather innocently I tripped on a stick and out of nowhere I hear this madman yelling at the top of his lungs "THAT'S A FUCKING PENALTY!!!"
It was John Tortorella walking his dog in my neighborhood. At first I laughed and thought it was hilarious until I realized he was dead serious and started almost hyperventilating. Shit got serious when he tossed a chair onto the playing field and demanded a penalty be called. I told my friend Steve (it was his stick I tripped over) bro you should just sit down for a couple of minutes in a make shift penalty box area at the far top corner of my yard so that this lunatic calms down.
Steve went into the penalty box area. We kept playing. Tortarella kept staring at Steve in the penalty box to make sure he served the whole two minutes, then offered some critique on our lack of urgency on the power play.
You just gained a sub. Good channel. No, the above story never happened but I am sure a couple people were thinking Tortorella has to get some help as they were reading.
Why is the extra player coming on to the ice as soon as the ref raises his arm? He has to wait until his goalie skates to the bench. Even if it was a penalty, Phi would have too many men on the ice because the extra skater did not wait until the goalie skated over.

My dad coaches U13s and this happened to his team late in a game. The ref had his arm up for a good 20 seconds, my dad pulls the goalie, the arm went down and the other team scored into the empty net. Problem is my dad is such a nice guy he didn’t lose his mind on the ref.

(A mistake to be sure) But, what does that have to do with Philly putting an extra man on the ice? Even if it was a delayed penalty, the extra player would have to wait for the goaltender to leave anyways… Perhaps someone can better explain it to me.
Greatest Torts video of the year. It was worth it just to see the reaction from Torts. Merry Xmas to me. Complete disbelief. They didn't even show the goalie going to the bench. You can't jump on the ice with the goalie still out there. They evened out their mistake. Funny.

You hear it all the time that refs dont call penalties if it doesnt effect the play. Then, when it does they call it. Never seen it hash out like this before though.
The refs are only human. We all make mistakes. Like you have never made a mistake at work? Relax, it’s just a hockey game. I know, that borders on sacrilegious but it is just a hockey game. 😅
The NHL has hired all these ex players and fast tracked then thru the system. They reach the NHL with very little experience in the minor leagues and it shows night in and night out. Not the way to develop officials.

Refs are trash. Something needs to be done. Its happening more and more in recent years that the refs are deciding games… needs to be stopped.
