To kick off a new edition of The DFO Rundown, Jason and Frank sunk their teeth into the latest surrounding the New York Rangers, who continue to struggle. GM Chris Drury tried to shake things up by trading Captain Jacob Trouba and it hasn’t sparked the team the way that they had hoped. Will someone pay for these struggles with their job? Or will the Rangers try to see this through with their current group? The guys debated it.
From there, they went to upstate New York and talked about the Sabres ten game losing streak. Is it time for a change at the top in Buffalo? Frank thinks it might be but also wasn’t willing to say that their season is over. Things aren’t working and that is a fact. The Sabres will need to change something soon.
They then went out west and talked about the comments that Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Rick Tocchet following the teams loss this weekend. Was Tocchet right to call out his team? The guys discussed it. Frank thinks the Canucks have an issue on their blueline and wondered if they should have been in on the Cam Fowler trade talks. That then led them to breakdown the deal that did happen between the Blues and Ducks.
Tyler then popped in for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked them about the Ottawa Senators playoff chances, who the truly elite teams are in the West, and which team could be next to make a trade.
After that, they talked about the MVP race and a pair of teams in the Eastern Conference who are continuing to play well after strong starts to the season.

Rangers are in deep doo doo. Changes need to happen as soon as possible
Melt the sabres with rangers. Try to make one good team from those bums and rest can be sent to ahl teams forever.
I have to pause right there at 2:30.
I totally agree with Frank. For once, let the players be accountable and not the coach…if they don't care about showing up anymore.
No wonder the name of Brady Tkachuk has been thrown around because as a Rangers fan I already knew that the psyche of this (talented) team was very fragile and it needs an influx of grit badly.
That being said, I don't see that blockbuster happening soon for obvious reasons. Ottawa's owner would have to get into the witness protection program if he decided to trade his captain to New-York.
Just a correction though. They went from 12-4-1 to 15-15-1. Do the maths. Hence the memo to the league when the slide began in Calgary.
But that good start was deceiving since many of those early wins were against poor teams and because of their goalies who saved their bacon many times.
So Drury did not overreact. And now he knows how thin skin his players really are which does not help him very much because the whole league knows it as well.
Ummm….blaming NYR issues on Kappo is absolutely ridiculous. He hasn't been the player you wanted him to be for a while. When they resigned KK you did because of his defense, it sure wasn't because of his offense.
And a lot of Shesty's save percentage is blamed on odd man rushes against. A great example was when Jones pinched and not a single offensive player read the situation and was there to support the defense. First and second lines aren't there defensively. There are a lot of stubborn players on that team.
I will agree with Frank that they've also had some bad bounces for a number of games. They're also overthinking passes and shooting chances. Changing the coach isn't a horrible thing, if you think something needs to be done. But if it's a player then you should be trading a number of players, not just one.
Mutiny. Plain and simple by the players vs Drury and Laviolette
NY is still my cup favorite in the East.
Realized how soft this team was after they got knocked out by the Lightning in the Conference finals. Zibanejad has been in a spiral ever since then, yes he had 39 goals the following year, but That year Kreider and others fed him a ton of shots he had 440 total shots attempted that year. 39 goals. Kreider also handled that horribly, and went into wet nursing Zibanejad over team play since that loss as well. Fox is extremely over rated, he skates like a kid, slow and laboring. He also pinches way too much and gets himself caught. Good passer, Good on offense, Horrible defense. Almost this whole team mentality is to play cute, trying to make hilight reel plays instead of simple straight up hockey. And it seems only Cuylle plays the man every time.
The guy on the left is clueless about Kakko. In 388 minutes played this year he has 14 points, and is a +10. Kreider has 11 points in 469 min played, -4. You may think Kakko isn't a top 10 player but his all around play says differently. Laviolette needs to keep Cuylle, Chytl and Kakko intact and give them more minutes. Zibanejad finally got benched. Proving he should have been the healthy scratch. But politics prevailed. The bigger investment again is given the ice time over the more meritus player. That is why things got so bad with Trouba. They did everything to bolster that guys image and he did nothing to prove his worth or the minutes and status he was given. The same thing is going on with Zibanejad. Politics over awarding merit.
Ball parties have some responsibility in this The players, the coach and the GM. For a time I wasn't blaming the coach but he's done nothing to scratch the players that are really causing a lot of the issues and he's not giving some of the younger guys are putting a points more ice time. Last night the final two minutes was a prime example he wanted to go back to something comfortable rather than something that worked to get them back in the position to fight for the game.
Mika should have been the healthy scratch last night. He needs to watch this from the press box A lot of times the Rangers go as Mika and bread man go
This team's defense and team defense: has been atrocious for a long time.
Their fundamentals and effort levels: has been pathetic.
Goaltending was their saving grace, early on. Because their whole defensive fundamentals and efforts have been absurd, even back then.
This is a major problem with the veteran Core: including Fox and Lindgren ( who have been ridiculously bad, for way too long).
Bullshit! It’s not Drury’s fault, he didn’t leak his own memo for f sakes!
And yes, the leak of the memo was a blessing, 4:03 because we now know the softness of this team is beyond any magnitude we considered in the ECF vs Florida (or Tampa 2 years ago for that matter). It revealed the team is NOT fraught with so called professionals.
Play rempe !
I was thinking the same before we traded trouba (when frank said do nothing)… then I guess a week now… their clearly needs to be a coaching change.
It's pretty clear too that druy fumbled this offseason. Maybe fans don't understand but goodrow was a leader in the room. Kinda held down that bottom 6. And yes was a contributer in the playoffs maybe even more then the bread man… trouba talk contuied and obviously disgruntled the chemistry in the locker room… from top to bottom… playing Lindgren hurt is wild. I still cannot blame this core for all the success they have been having. Gallant got fired because of druy and the bread-and-butter man. Sure krider and Mika slew down, doaent mean they need to be demoted to bottom 6 that is a huge strech. I look at laffy contract and I'm confused. IMO with all the things written. It's purely mangement and a crap defensive system established by Peter. Let's also not forget the importance of defensive depth. Seeing Conner Mackey and Chad as a pair is mind boggling. Not even toronoto had to go that route. I'd rather have McIlrath then Laffy at this point.
What is the logic giving laffy 7mil for long term when he isn't even cracking the PP and he can only post 60 playing with a 100pt player is wild.
1. Peter
2. Druy
3. KAM
Is John Gibson a bad goalie? Because if igor is a bad goalie then everyone in the league is a backup.
Disagree with Frank big time on Buffalo. So the GM should sell low on young players? Just need a goalie.
I get the player thing. However, what did Drury miss this summer that we all knew. So we can say the players have not reacted, but Drury must have been on an island in the middle of nowhere because he missed the boat. 🎄🍸🏒
Just to make the Rangers more of an carny show, they should hire Mike Babcock.
How bad have we become that Kakko is your savior. Pathetic
Drury needs to go this core should have been broken up 3 years ago when they blew the eastern conference finals to Tampa bay Drury has no idea how to judge talent !!! This guy is not a legitimate GM
