Hello everyone, Joseph Hadid here for WWSUP and Welcome to this week’s sports update! I’m your host, and I’m excited to share the latest news from the world of sports.
NFL Insider Weighs in on Seriousness of Deion Sanders-Cowboys Rumors:
With the Dallas Cowboys falling out of the NFC playoff race, there’s a lot of discussion on who will be the next head coach. Current Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is a lame duck after not getting an extension last season. Some fans and analysts believe former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick would be a good replacement for McCarthy, and someone owner Jerry Jones would love to hire. But the idea of Hall of Fame cornerback and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders jumping to the NFL to coach the Cowboys has been floated on TV this week. However, Sanders has made it clear that he’s happy where he’s at, and can you blame him? The Buffaloes have played good football this season and are in the running to possibly win the Big 12 title.
Giannis Antetokounmpo nets 59 in Bucks’ OT win:
Giannis Antetokounmpo amassed an NBA season-high 59 points as the Milwaukee Bucks overturned an 18-point deficit to defeat the visiting Detroit Pistons 127-120 in overtime on Wednesday night. It was Antetokounmpo’s ninth 50-plus outing and the second best of his career, after his 64-point effort against Indiana last season. The two-time MVP hit 21 of 34 from the field, 16 of 17 from the foul line, and had 14 rebounds, seven assists and three blocks. Brook Lopez provided the support with 29 points. Cade Cunningham had 35 points and 11 assists for the Pistons, while Malik Beasley hit eight 3-pointers in his 26-point, 10-rebound game.
Connor McDavid scores to become the 4th-fastest NHL player to reach 1,000 points:
Connor McDavid became the fourth-fastest NHL player to reach 1,000 points, scoring early in the second period for the Edmonton Oilers against the Nashville Predators on Thursday night. The 27-year-old McDavid reached the milestone in his 659th game. Wayne Gretzky was the fastest at 424 games, followed by Mario Lemieux at 513 and Mike Bossy at 656. McDavid has 341 goals and 659 assists. He’s the 99th NHL player to reach 1,000 points.
Vasilevskiy makes NHL history as Lightning snap Jets’ 7-game win streak:
Andrei Vasilevskiy made 24 saves in his 300th NHL win, and the Tampa Bay Lightning stopped Winnipeg’s seven-game win streak with a 4-1 victory over the Jets on Thursday night. Vasilevskiy is the 40th goaltender in league history to win 300 games. He reached the milestone in 490 games, the fewest in NHL history, 31 faster than Jacques Plante. Winnipeg lost for just the second time in 17 games this season. It dropped to 7-1 on the road. Jake Guentzel scored twice for the Lightning, who had lost their previous five games against the Jets, including 7-4 in Winnipeg on Nov. 3. Guentzel put Tampa Bay in front 7:24 into the first period, and goals by Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli 57 seconds apart early in the second made it 3-0. Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry scored on a deflection at 6:54 of the second, but Guentzel got an empty-netter with 21 seconds left. Jets backup goalie Eric Comrie made 25 saves but lost for the first time in his four starts this season.
