On April 6, 1906, the Galveston Giant Jack Johnson faced off against the Boston Bonecrusher Sam Langford at the Lincoln Athletic Club in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Johnson’s Colored World Heavyweight title as on the line. Langford gave up 29 pounds coming into the contest at 156 pounds while Johnson weighed 185. Despite hist physical advantages, Johnson had a hard go against Langford who was strong and stout though weighing less than a middleweight. Johnson sent Langford to the canvas in the sixth round but found himself on wobbly legs as the round closed. Johnson would ultimately win a 15 rounds points victory over Langford. After winning the World Heavyweight title in 1908, Johnson repeatedly denied then-full-fledged heavyweight Sam Langford a shot at the championship. As jack Johnson stated in his own words, “Sam Langford was the toughest little son of a bitch that ever lived.”

  1. I also recall Jack Johnson saying that None of the Colored Heavyweight contenders could amass the $35,000.00 Guarantee Jack demanded to grant them a title shot!

  2. Jack Johnson knew he could possibly lose if he had fought Sam Langford again so he didn’t want any more that smoke hell Jack Dempsey aka “The Mannassa Mauler” said that he was afraid of Sam Langford and wouldn’t fight him.
