While I don't believe that deep anaylitics are 'everything' or tell the only story there is to tell, I love them for being able to tease out information like you did in this video .. I don't think anyone would have figured Hughes' defending ability is higher than Makar for example .. Totally sweet stuff man ..
As a Canucks fan, I will say in defense of Makar's D zone play, the Avs have been getting pretty poor goaltending since the start of last season.

I'm praying the HABS have lucked out their own version of Hughes with Lane Hutson. He's such a similar type player in many opinions. One of the smallest defenders in the league. But can shake 'n bake, head fake, and find open teammates with ease. They recently promoted him to first PP line QB, and with Laine's return it could be interesting. He hasn't found his goal scoring yet, but that'll come eventually. And if it wasn't for Michkov's recent surge Hutson would be a definite challenge for the Calder.
The HABS season has been tough to watch so far this year. Mostly because of horrendous backup goaltending, and IMHO, constant hectic line juggling. But little things like Hutson's emergence and a couple of other little surprises like Heineman …etc, it makes for something interesting to watch in MTL at the very least.
He and his brother both are phenomenal, would be killer to see them on a team together at some point

Stats don’t lie and people will still try and say he’s not the best defensemen in the league. Watching him on the ice is magic!! Hockey IQ, instincts, and extreme dedication to improvement has made him an exceptional player. People will know his name for years to come and Im so glad we get to watch him evolve.

I live in Europe (and I'm unfortunately a Leafs fan, so I'm now admittedly partial to Tanev), but hockey fans here know all about Quinn Hughes. If he wins a few more Norrises, that would be… entirely fair.
I agree with everything except that Ron McLean is a legend. He is not. Hughes is the goat, he’s a top three player in the league.
Okay, I know everyone wants to say makar is better, it's a fair perspective. But first 4 years of Hughes canucks were not a playoff team, makar came onto a contender and their point totals since their draftings are still comparable. The avs were good every year until this year to help assist makars totals. Also hughes plus/minus destroys makars under the terms of those same standards. I think by end of career Hughes out stats makar
He'll keep racking-up points, setting franchise records, and then they'll have to notice.

Florida fan here. Quinn is in my mind the single player that causes the most problems for my team. Luckily it’s far to Vancouver!!

No…I pretty much knew it the past 2 seasons. Most hockey fans, and that INCLUDES "knowledgeable canadian" hockey fans, are really not very good at judging good defensive play.
It's hilarious seeing Flames fans and now Leaf fans going gaga over Chris Tanev. They never even watched prime Tanev. I remember telling people back in the day that watching Tanev play was the equivalent on the D side of watching McDavid or Crosby on O. Tanev was an absolute magician of defensive work and his takeaways were absolutely breath taking. What did I get from the VAST majority of fans? "yeah right…he's not that good." Even most canuck fans were ignorant about seeing it. You Leaf fans who are now seeing how good he is, are only seeing a fraction of what he was. And he's still amazing.
So it's no surprise ignorant fans from other markets continue to underestimate Hughes' defensive game. I've said it for 2 years now. I would never trade Hughes for Makar. Makar is amazing and I'm sure Avs fans would say the same thing in reverse and I get that too. They're both two of the very best in the league. The difference is Avs fans think Makar is "way better". He isn't. At minimum they're basically even. And as you just did, I'd say at this point Hughes is probably a little better.

If you got the skill and even more important, the on-ice awareness, size isn’t as important. Theoren Fleury and Marcel Dionne proved that. And Hughes is 2inches taller than Dionne, and 4inches taller than Fleury.
All Hughes needs to do is watch Lidstrom game film. That was defensive surgery.

Dont watch much hockey but I caught a period and a half of Canucks the other day. And I was just blown away with how good Q Hughes is! Had the idea that he was flashy but a bit of a liability. That couldnt be further from the truth. Hes just soo cool with the puck, never in a rush, very rarely gambles, great passer, great skater, moves the puck himself when needed, leaves it for others when that is wiser. Probably good on the defensive side too, but mostly he seemed to be in possession and control.
Gen talent… he’s easily the best D man in the game for the past 2 years and he’s just getting better
Hard to score goals against him when he keeps possession of the puck for so much of his shift. The guy makes plays out of nothing and makes it look effortless. I wasn’t sold on him when he first started in the NHL, but I quickly changed my tune.
I would be interested to see his stats during the playoffs when teams were really targeting him and laying the body on him
