Why The San Jose Sharks Traded Mackenzie Blackwood Now And What Are They Getting Back?

In this episode of “Locked On Sharks,” we dissect the recent trade that sent goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks to the Colorado Avalanche. Host JD Young provides an in-depth analysis of the trade, highlighting the strategic timing and the assets acquired in return. The Sharks received Alexandar Georgiev, Nikolai Kovalenko, a 2026 second-round draft pick, and a conditional 2025 fifth-round pick. This move underscores the Sharks’ proactive approach, capitalizing on Blackwood’s recent performances to secure valuable future assets.

The discussion delves into the potential impact of Alexandar Georgiev joining the Sharks. Despite his struggles this season, there’s optimism that a change of scenery and a new coaching approach could help him regain form. JD Young explores Georgiev’s past successes and how he might fit into the Sharks’ goaltending strategy. Additionally, the episode examines Nikolai Kovalenko’s potential as a middle-six forward, emphasizing his skill and physicality, which align with the team’s playing style.

Finally, the episode considers the broader implications for the Sharks’ goaltending future, particularly regarding top prospect Yaroslav Askarov. JD Young argues that the trade doesn’t alter Askarov’s development timeline, as the organization remains committed to his growth in the AHL. However, the current NHL goaltending tandem might lead to challenging games, potentially positioning the Sharks for a high draft pick. This episode offers a comprehensive look at the trade’s impact, providing listeners with valuable insights into the Sharks’ evolving strategy.

  1. Dude, I’ve been listening to you since mlo was born. You seen out of sync right in terms of presentation of your video right now.

  2. I was sad to see Kovi go in the trade. I hope he is great for the Sharks. I hope Georgiev finds his confidence as well.

  3. Nice to have Gushchin and Kovalenko on the team and in a season or two Chernyshov as well. Some teammates to build comradery with.

  4. I highly disagree about your Askarov thinking. Giving away Blackwood who the team played for and getting Georgiev in return who is really really poor. Is like shooting yourself in the foot and killing the moral of the team. This was all done in mind of Askarov being called up and to get NHL experience with all the young kids such as Macklin and Smith, etc. Georgiev and Vanecek are UFA’s. More trades to come. Asky is coming up soon.
