If the Leafs ever have to face the Bruins in another game 7, for the love of God scratch/sit Mathews.
These goalies are like the Sawchuk-Bower Tandem. Play the hot hand both are excellent goalies, are they on Sawchuk or Bower's level? is to be seen. But Stolarz reminds me of Bower in coming into his own in his early 30s and finally getting a chance to be a starter in a tandem of starters.

I think the easy answer is Yes, the Leafs look for Matthews too much. We know Mitch does, but we also know Nylander or someone like Rielly will shoot. Lots of guys will shoot over pass. With Matthews injured AND Knies dominating net-front it's going to be hard to separate what the issue was, if it's fixed. It's likely, no one went to the net AND overplayed the guy who isn't 100%.
You just have two factors. An AM34 whose shot hasn't been there so while looking for him too much hampered the PP, but also with no one going net front, the shots not from him are less effective. If you give the PP1 a healthy Matthews and a Knies net-front, I think there is no problem looking for Matthews more than any other player. Trying to rely on AM34 to get the monkey off their back with no one at the net and him not being 100% is a pretty big error that should resolve itself with time if Knies stays where he excels.
So it is still a Yes, but one that will become a No if Knies plays the way he does, the aren't snake bitten anymore, and Matthews is 100%…because hell yeah you want him to have it.
The most ‘leafy’ thing of all is the way we get excited and believe in them all over again when they have these weirdly counter-intuitive predictably leafy games!

I have been mulling the same Matthews thought. He is always dragging two other-team players when in possession, AND is extremely good at hogging the puck for long stretches, often only to give it up without scoring. If he were the decoy more often, the other Leafs would have more offensive zone possession time with fewer opponents hanging off them. All minutes where Matty goes figure skating rob the. Leafs of scoring opportunities. Mitch can find any of the Leafs anywhere. I like Matty – a lot – but games are 60 minutes minus opposition possession time minus Matty possession time.
Bruins fan here. watching the difference between Swayman and Stolarz was jarring. Swayman was miscommunicating with his D, losing track of pucks where i feel like he normally wouldn't, sloppy movement. Stolarz was the polar opposite of all that. wild to see.

Trying to go to Mathews all the time on the power play is the problem. Its become to pardictable, and every team in the nhl know exactly what there tryng to do. They just come down amd take the cross ice pass away. By getting some point shots and someone in front on a regular basis will force the defence to move up and gaurd the point shot, witch will open the cross ice pass again.

If JT's line isnt scoring, we arent winning.
No shot from the D and looking for the perfect play are the problems on the PP. Makes them easy to defend. We need to have srambles in front getting the PK out of structure and then the skill guys can make a play.
So Knies just has to be JVR 2.0
