Alex Ovechkin had a goal and two assists for the Washington Capitals in a 6-3 win against Montreal Canadiens at Capital One Arena on Thursday.
Ovechkin has three goals in his past two games to bring his career total to 858; he needs 37 to pass Wayne Gretzky (894) for first on the NHL’s all-time goals list.
“He’s been awesome,” linemate Aliaksei Protas said. “The way he celebrates, you feel like it’s his first NHL goal when you know he’s chasing one of the unreal records. You see the look in his eyes, just feels happy to be there, celebrating like a kid. It’s special. That’s what makes him an unbelievable player and scorer, that’s for sure. That’s how hungry he is to score.”
Protas and Tom Wilson each had a goal and an assist for the Capitals (7-2-0), who have won five straight home games. Trevor van Riemsdyk and Dylan Strome each had two assists, and Charlie Lindgren made 13 saves.
Nick Suzuki had a goal and an assist, and Cole Caufield scored in his fourth straight game for the Canadiens (4-6-1). Lane Hutson had two assists, and Cayden Primeau made 28 saves.
“We’re going through some things right now, and the frustrating thing is it’s repeating mistakes by all of us,” Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher said. “As individuals, I think we need to be more accountable toward the team. Once again, we’re sitting here disappointed. We lost a game we felt like we handed it to them.”

Really could have used the win, I thought it was going to happen multiple times tonight but, I’m still happy with how this game turned out. It feels like puzzle pieces are falling into place and the imagine becoming more clear. What did you think of the game? Let me know I want to hear from you!
Agreed. Not a bad game. Good analysis. Gotta score on the 5 on 3, though…no excuses. 😉
Matheson cannot be doing what he was doing tonight
Saw a lot of positives for this one! Despite the score
that behind of the net plays are really frustrating… when I see puck is behind our goal I get nervous because lately all pucks from there are going right to the stick of forwards and to our net… We got to be more decisive and strong around the goalie and not only in front but also the back…
Bababooey bababooey love the vid i have nothing to say but comment for the algo!!!!
I know where being positive but Dvorak's gotta go give me Beck F. xhekaj or Gignac even in that spot he's making peewee level mistakes as a 4th line vet can't have it. Not sure what Marty was thinking throwing him out on that 5 on 3 he should of been stapled to the bench after that. 🤦
Seen Dvorak had a assisst did they actually give him a assisst on Washington's goal 😂But otherwise like the video and agree with you 😊
Just because Matheson can score once and awhile his defensive play is not good this year.
Your right, it was not a bad game, they could of given 3 in the first and quit, but they did not quit.
Look – we all know that a mistake in the NHL leads to a scoring chance. There was a mistake by the Habs every Caps goal. Montreal beats themselves
a good game these days is one where there are no major injuries.
win
I totally agree, Bro!
If only we had more finishers, Hutson would have 15 passes by now. And another thing, we have to stop giving quick goals: Caps scored 2 goals in the 2nd and 2 goals in the 3rd, both less than 1 minute apart.
We can't hang the goaltending for this one , this team is still learning how to play in this league and also how to play as a team !!! It's painful to watch for us as fans and for ownership as well !!! There is going to be more changes in the players on the ice and the style of play for this team and we all have to remain patient as frustrating as that can be !!! Great content Whiskey keep up the good work
Agreed, very good analysis.
To add to it, it's weird how quick we went from allowing only 23 shots but almost all of them way too easy to score on to the complete opposite : 34 shots with only a few easy ones (I'd say maybe 3). There's a balance to be found surely. A good thing Guhle's back, hope he can come back to his best self soon.
As for Dvorak… he's only had a couple decent ones in 10 games so far, he was finally healthy to start the season so we'd expected a bit more from him. So far his efforts aren't to par with Anderson's & Evans' (& Gally's). I hope he can do better soon otherwise we have a natural Center in Kapanen who will soon start to feel frustrated if we keep him on a wing for too long. Plus things are starting to be unfair to Pezzetta who's not doing bad at all when in the lineup, solid efforts overall with much less badly timed hits & turnovers than previous seasons, I'd be ok trying out a 4th line with Kapanen at center, Pez on his wing and Dvorak taking a breather on the bench.
I think that the team made really stupid mistakes but it was not as bad as Tuesday. Still, we should be finding a way to be in the mix. Hopefully Laine will change things.
Matheson has to get less ice time he is terrible defensively and dvorak needs to be scratched permanently. On the positive side, good to see slaf carry the 2nd line back to form and hutson has always is magical. Would like to see maybe armia for a game on the top line just to see if his puck control in the offensive zone could be enough to help the first line produce more, because heinemen wasn’t it. If it doesn’t work with armia id give a chance to barré-boulet who is playing for 2ppg in the ahl right now
Why don’t nobody talk about chicken Barron ?
Love your analysis. Hudson is incredible. Anderson, a fellow Burlingtonian, just jumped a few notches on the respect scale. Wow, to defend his team mate like that against big, bad Tom Wilson and absolutely pummel him…wow. This might be the highlight of the year for this team.
Honestly thank you SO MUCH for providing some optimistic analysis! It’s sooooo refreshing and I kinda agree with everything you’re saying! For me it was a decent game up until the 3rd period, which made the final result more disappointing than Tuesday’s game IMO
Had since 2020 was in rebuild not seen team getting better
At 2:50 mark of your video, How… How… How does the linesman miss that offside call??? Amazing! Anyone need 50 full size Aero and Kitkat bars?
bottom line, habs are too soft and lose way too many battles. That's the problem
I know there are some positives but it's hard not to see the negatives. Over 20 give aways last night. Dvorak and Barron are just so bad. Dvorak being put on the 5-3 power play just confuses me. We lack leadership, grit, defense and goaltending. We win 4 games out of 11 but can easily be argued that we deserved 2 of those wins. Overall it just seems we aren't a better team then last year.
The defense of this team is struggling hard. Hutson is just… incredible. Here I am thinking he's a 5'9" defensemen, there's obviously gonna be no defense from the kid and just pure offense… No. Hutson is arguably one of the team's best defensemen, if not the best. He actually bodied people a few times and has an amazing stick. But the team's habit of just absolutely crumbling on defense is getting old. Getting caught in the D zone for 2-3 straight minutes and getting scored 2-3 goals in quick succession. They manage to ruin in entire game within 3 minutes.
I think our goalies – BOTH OF THEM – are useless. They're DREADFULLY BAD, both Montembeault and Primeau. They are a definite WEAK SPOT on the Habs and need to be swapped out for goalies with actual ballz.
The habs have been known for their speed years after years but this season they look really slow, they rarely win puck battles and can't keep the pressure in the offensive zone at all. I think theyll need to figure out how to skate faster or we will have to get used to losing. You can have all the talent in the world, you will still lose if you cant touch the puck
Habs FORGOT! games are 3 periods… take aways: Mr Goalfields 10 th !! On pace for 80.. Mr Anderson demolishes the Wilson Monster! and p.s. Mr Ovenchicken gets his 858 th!
I’m still fighting to be positive. I had to not-watch most of the third period. Last night was experience vs inexperience.
Nice change. Instead of whining about a loss, you look for the positives in the game. Thank you.
Another exciting game under the belt!! I have not liked the Dvorak acquisition since day one. I don’t know what the GM will be able to do with him this year. But at least, his contract ends at the end of the year. Armchair coach here says that they should put Evans back on the 4th line with Armia as the shut down line and play less of the 3rd line. Eineman is fine on the 1st but maybe give Kapanen some looks too during the game with Nick and Cole? But who knows. By midday, the lines may be all mixed up again. Have a good game on Saturday night guys!!!
