Why the McCabe extension is a slam dunk signing for Leafs

The Maple Leafs re-signed defenceman Jake McCabe to a five-year, $22.55 million contract extension on Monday. How should Toronto be graded on this deal? Domino’s That’s Hockey debates.

  1. For all the haters go suck a lollipop. McCabe brings 100 and his tenacity directly rubs off on everyone who's on the ice with him and his entertainment value alone is impeccable. Defenceman hit their prime at 27-28 and McCabe isn't far off and his grind is made for the playoffs and that's more to me than anything.

  2. Reilly, Tanev, OEL, McCabe, Benoit. They have five good bodies there. Depth guys good too. But def room for one more solid middle pair quality guy and then the top 6 will be just fine

  3. How do you develop Banford,Niemela, Chadwick and that US kid we got when you have 4 old guys occupying spots? He should’ve been a trade piece at the deadline.

  4. Good contract. Dont know why anyone would take issue with it. He took a discount to stay and should be commended. If only some others on the team did so as well.

  5. The Leafs signed a pretty good 31 year old defensive defenseman for five more years for 4.5 million. This is a slam dunk or a slight over pay for a pretty good mid pair defender.

  6. By the same logic of the cap going up to $100mil sometime, then paying Marner $15mil/season on his next extension should be a bargain as well. Lol

  7. Lilljegren was a known entity and a RH insurance policy when signed at $3M for 2 year term. MJ forgot to include that thinking, but he is right you cannot afford for him to not play at that coin. But look at Brodie, that situation was far worse, so Leafs parted ways. I believe Leafs are about to pull the trigger on a trade including Lilljegren and Holmberg, when Calle Jarnkrok returns. Hakanpaa is also about ready, and Myers played well, and in my opinion, is a better fit in TO than 37.

  8. Toronto Media: Toronto is going onto a deep run in the playoffs! Based on what? A very inconsistent team … they won't get beyond the first round … again.
