  1. You really could make this a series. Players like Jake Guentzel, Sam Reinhart Connor McDavid and many more dominate the game with their intelligence

  2. Brilliant dissertation!

I coach youth hockey and you video encapsulates what I try to impart to my team: skate smarter not necessarily faster. How many times have we seen a player skate the puck into the defense, or bring the puck into the center when they’re giving them the wall. There’s a level of patience that Rhino possesses, like Messi or Mahomes, where they seem to wait out the pressure with little movements and angle changes, then strike.

It’s hard to teach but I think the key — as you do so well here — is ti start the conversation. All I see from the kids, especially the “better” players is UP ICE as FAST AS POSSIBLE. You aptly show that the best do it somewhat differently. Even Mac or McDavid are often under handling the puck and using a slower pace to maintain space and time.

Maybe it’s easier for me because I can’t skate fast up ice any longer, but there’s a subtlety to the elite that is so intriguing and great to watch. We can coach good habits and thoughts, but the greats create off that in ways that seem almost supernatural.

I think Barkov has this quality, and Larkin to some extent. Another FLA Panther is Tchuky. He’s got a “nose” for the goal and the puck — he’s just more of a blunt object rather than a surgeon.

    Great stuff. I’ll be subscribing!

  3. Would absolutely love part 2. I can't stand Florida but there's a few players there with that super high hockey intelligence, I would say Tkachuk also competes for smartest player on my list. He's very rarely flashy but always knows where to be and his passing seems to set people up for really high quality shots even though they seem like routine plays. This is a totally bias pick because I'm a MN fan but Kirill Kaprizov is my dark horse pick for smartest player in the NHL. He doesn't necessarily have world class speed but through his mega creative edgework and vision/playmaking he's able to be super deceptive. Just a quick plug for my boy 'cause I feel like he doesn't always get the credit he deserves.

  4. Yep, nailed it. He's also the smartest businessman in the show as well. Knows his worth, not a distraction or over inflated ego. No drama, no BS just solid production and a catalyst for the whole team to rally around. The anti-Swayman or Crysaitl.
