As much as the players are responsible for there great start. The most responsible is the GM and Carbery + his staff.
Why is no one talking about how much Ovi sucks at hitting the goal?
I like how everyone forgets the % of goals per shots. Ovi only have 12.9% of accuracy. That is compared to most top historical players who sits on 15%. Wayne is at 17% with 1000 shots less than Ovi. Ovi sits at 6000. Mario L is the best goal scorer in history with 19% accuracy.
And before you say "but it was easier to score in the 80s and 90s I can inform you most top players these days have an average of around 15% accuracy. And I can count a few that sits at 18% + so that argument about it being easier to score back in the day dont work.

ovi is playing like 2002-2005 ovi. he put the league on notice this season letting everyone else know hes still that dude and will break everyone off some.
Whether it's your first goal or your 800th, the rush is almost equal every time.
After last season, I had serious doubts that he'd catch up to WG, that assumption took a U-turn over the past month. With the way the Caps are playing currently, i think OV breaking Wayne's record is almost a forgone conclusion.
WG's career assist record, now that's gonna be a long time standing.

Alex Ovechkin is nothing but a puck hog has hardly any assists in his career has played more seasons than Wayne Gretzky also is one year older and he's only playing so he can break a record.
They're not going to win the cup ever again.
And if he breaks the record there's nothing to brag about cuz he did it in more time.
Just like Barry Bonds and his steroid abuse.

Last season was unexpected
Ovi spent extra time earlier in the season in the film room with Protas and Strome, teaching them how best to set him up and working on just general chemistry. Strome has assisted in all 10 of Ovi's goals this year. The extra work appears to be paying off. The line has combined for 19 goals and 34 assists. Really clicking right now.

Tbh they have been playing abit better now since the washington game. Yes they lost 3-2 bit played better. They beat 4-0 utah in their best effort overall and result wise. The effort is starting to come togjeter. The result too. I dont think we are far off from some real result in preds favor. This west canada swing can be that crucial moment the team gets it togheter
what a shame, not half the player Gretzky is/was. It will be a real downgrade to have this basic stat compiler hold the record instead of the greatest of all time.

I don’t just want him to get the record I want him to destroy it. Since Gretsky is now a paid shill for pharma companies I hope all his records fall magnificently, his legacy isn’t worth dog shit now. So fitting his first one falls to a Russian. And if anyone has a problem with what I just said believe me I don’t care.

He doesn't have the quickness and speed of his youth, doesn't mean he is any less a genius and any less of a threat. Still has a strong and accurate shot, still positions himself well in the offensive zone. Players with the level of the great 8 in any sport never really stop being a threat.
If you put his dead corpse to stand still in front of the net, rest assured: one puck will take a bounce and go in for a goal.
NHL goaltending has gotten much worse in the past 5 years, so that is why it's so easy to score in today's NHL.

when it was May this year, i thought Ovi was running on an empty tank, i remember he was brutal in the playoffs.
However it seems the Caps team didn't fall apart right now. Maybe it's great coaching?

Okay, I’m an Edmonton girl, born and raised. I was in the hospital for a month and a half when I was born and the first place I went to after the hospital was an ice rink to watch my brother practice, not home but to a rink lol. Grew up on Gretz, his statue stands in my home town. My mother in law was a server to the oilers in the early 90’s and said Moose (Messier) and team were great patrons and even better tippers. Spent my whole childhood watching my brother and grandpa go nuts over the oilers in the late 80’s and 90’s…buuuut still hope #8 breaks the record. When he was a kid, his parents took him to a toy store and all he wanted was a little toy stick, and then his brother died in a car crash (he was his hockey idol) and Ovi vowed to play the game for him, such a bittersweet tale. Anyway, he is a goal scorer and a MF tank. My fave player of all time is the other Russian, #13 Datsyuk…the opposite of Ovi, a gentleman ghost of a hockey player that all other players loved and respected, wish he still played in the NHL. Anyway, I’ve too many beers and I’m done now. Thanks for attending my Ted Talk.
