If you think guys didnt have to fight after clean hits in the 70s and 80s, you either werent paying attention or werent actually alive to have seen it. If you attempted to hit a star player and missed, there was still a good chance you were gonna fight. If you absolutely clobbered someone you usually ended up fighting. You couldnt pull a kronwall or phaneuf and just casually skate away like nothing happened. You wanna keep incidental head shots low, you gotta accept fighting after clean hits. They tried to push fighting out of the game and it lead to a parade of elite superstars getting concussed because there was nothing stopping guys from running them. The league takes care of the dirty hits and the players take care of the rest. Id rather see fights after clean hits than to see mcdavid, matthews, mckinnon, hughes, etc etc etc missing huge chunks of their prime the way Crosby and Lindros did.

The refs could have broken it up at the beginning but moved equipment instead.
