This is a RARE penalty in the NHL

It’s been a tough start to the NHL season for the Nashville Predators, no doubt about it! Tonight as they rolled into Seattle, things didn’t get any better.. Just 43 seconds into play, Nashville was called for a penalty at the first whistle and while there was some confusion initially as to what for, they were called for a very rare bench penalty after a mixup with their starting lineup. The starting lineup they submitted prior to puck drop, was not the lineup that actually started the game after Forsberg’s number 9 and Stamkos’ number 91 were mixed up. This last happened in 2022 between the Blues and Oilers but what I found entertaining in this instance, was that Jessica Campbell was the one to realize the mistake and alerted the officiating crew. This is because of how poorly some reacted to her being hired as the first assistant coach in the NHL, so it seemed a bit poetic. I cover the explanation of the rule, the full game highlights and and more in todays NHL hockey video!

  1. My favorite thing was that the Kraken's first goal was scored by Sprong (#91) off the pass from Stephenson (#9). The same two numbers that caused the penalty at the start of the game. You can't make this stuff up. Let's go Kraken!

  2. So weird seeing stamkos on preds. Tampa fucked up why wouldn't they keep him for the rest of his career ? What a way to pay ur franchise player of 10 plus seasons

  3. The starting lineup in a hockey game is so trivial. You can roll out anyone and it doesn’t have much impact.

  4. It's a rare penalty because it's a new rule. You were never required to submit starting lineups in the past. Every game would start with the announcers discussing what each team might do for the initial line matchup to start the game. They only added the rule a couple of years ago because there started being too many games that weren't starting on time because both teams were trying to get the line matchup they wanted and they kept going back and forth throwing different lines out to counter the one the other team had thrown out.

  5. Not going to take anything away from her, or the call. But it's her job. This is set up as one of her responsibilities every game, covered going into the season. Like someone on the sideline of a footbll game is tasked with counting 11 players on the field, every play. As a girls youth travel soccer assistant coach, I counted the players on both sides throughout the game, and I'd expect the head coach to ream me if I blew it.

  6. This rule is so easy to get around. Have your starting line up on ice for the face off. After the Puck is dropped, change out the player you don't want on the ice, could be done in less than 5 seconds.

  7. Seattle – Karen Krakens?
Ugh. I hate "ticky-tac penalties" like this (also "is the goalie's stick too long or curved")….
that said, I understand WHY there's a penalty for it and shame on the Preds for not doing what they were supposed to do (unless "Number 9 in stead of Number 90" was a typo on the NHL)

  8. I'm going to say this for every team that is in the NHL it's a long season in the Oilers proved it last year that it's not too late to turn it around now a lot of Red Wings fans would like to keep the losing going because we want our coach fired but to be honest the Red Wings organization at the rate they're going in terms of overall decisions might have a very long Stanley Cup drought because we either stay committed to this rebuild or we start over and we've already started over before after waiting too long to start a rebuild
