Wayne Gretzky set the NHL goal record at 894 and despite scoring just 5 in 24 games to start last season, Alex Ovechkin has been on an absolute tear to start this season as he chases down that 894 mark. Coming into last nights matchup of the Washington Capitals vs the Vegas Golden Knights, he continued his dominance with a hat trick to bring him to 13 goals in just 17 games. It is looking much more like WHEN will he break the record, not IF he breaks it as he is on pace to score over 60 goals this season. He is also currently tied for first in the NHL with 13 goals and he’s doing it all at the age of 39. What we are witnessing is a living NHL legend doing something truly remarkable. Ovi is a legend. But I don’t understand why nhl and everyone always talk about regular season stats. I would only talk about stats including the series. If you score in the series it counts. This is true for all players, McDavid with 1000 points, Crosby with 1600… they have reached these plateau last year or before if you include the series. doesn’t make any sense to me how they talk about points or goals. Ok, you can be lucky and participate in more games if your team is good in the series, but, in the end, you need so many things for these record, health, no lockout, no covid…

He can score 100 this year, the record will have an asterick next to it. Gretsky is too modest to bring it up, but all his goals were during the 2 line pass era, All Ovi's goals came after the 2 line pass was eliminated from the game .There needs to be 2 sets of records, pre 2 line pass and post 2 line pass, because it made a huge diffference in scoring. Not to mention the other penalities that were clled back then that arent called now….

Ovechkin is probably the best pure goal scorer ever. However, if Mario Lemieux hadn't been injured and had cancer Ovechkin would have been chasing him instead of Gretzky.
Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but should the league check for drugs? This is quite a change from previous years for an "old man". Don't get me wrong, I'd love for him to break the record, legitimately. He's an amazing player.
