Boston already has made a coaching change early this season, firing Jim Montgomery last Tuesday after two-plus seasons. He was replaced by long-time assistant Joe Sacco on an interim basis. All Montgomery did was go 120-41-23 with the Bruins and lead them to the most wins and regular-season points in NHL history in 2022-23, but that team flopped in the first round of the playoffs and has disappointed this season. Don’t feel too bad for Montgomery. The St. Louis Blues wanted him so badly that they fired coach Drew Bannister and replaced him with Montgomery over the weekend.
This marks the first of two regular-season meetings between these franchises with Boston in Vancouver on Dec. 14. Last season, they split two low-scoring games with each winning at home. Danton Heinen led the Bruins with two goals, while superstar David Pastrnak had two assists. Linus Ullmark pitched a shutout in his win but is now with Ottawa, while Jeremy Swayman allowed three goals on 39 shots in his loss.
J.T. Miller led Vancouver with three points (all assists) and Brock Boeser led the team two goals in the series. Thatcher Demko was in net for both but yet to make his 2024-25 debut off a knee injury. While Demko is reportedly getting close, it won’t be Tuesday.
Vancouver Canucks
We projected the Canucks to be on the wrong side of a 4-3 game in Ottawa on Saturday, but instead they won by that score despite again playing without top forwards Brock Boeser (injury) and J.T. Miller (personal). Jake DeBrusk led the way with two goals and is up to five on the year (also had an assist as the No. 1 star), while Teddy Blueger (fourth) and Kiefer Sherwood (sixth) also found the net. It was DeBrusk’s 15th career multi-goal game and first with the Canucks. Elias Pettersson added two assists and always lights up the Senators. Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves to improve to 9-3-2 with a 2.74 GAA and .901 SV. The team has been alternating of late in net, so it might be Arturs Silovs (1-3-1, 3.91 GAA, .857 SV) on Tuesday. The Canucks have won seven straight road games to tie third longest-run in franchise history. The team record is nine in a row in the 2010-11 season. Vancouver is 1-6 in its past seven trips to Boston.
Boston Bruins
Boston won its second straight game on Saturday – so maybe the coaching change we mentioned above has worked – by a score of 2-1 in Detroit. Brad Marchand’s fifth goal of the season was the winner at 11:30 of the third. He became the third player in Bruins history to record 80 game-winning goals, joining Johnny Bucyk (88) and Patrice Bergeron (81). Justin Brazeau (fifth of season) also scored. Jeremy Swayman made 19 saves for the Bruins, who outshot Detroit 25-14 at even strength. Interim coach Joe Sacco is the eighth Bruins head coach to win his first two games behind the bench. The B’s remain without top-six blueliner Hampus Lindholm (3G, 4A), who is on injured reserve with a lower body injury. The under is 8-3 in Boston’s past 11 games. 🎥📢
