The Richard Oland Case : Murder in the Family – the fifth estate

It was called the trial of the century in New Brunswick – – a confluence of celebrity, money and murder. Richard Oland of the Moosehead brewing family — one of the richest, most powerful men in the region – was dead, bludgeoned in his office. Charged and convicted with the brutal killing, the victim’s son, Dennis Oland. Last week, Dennis Oland was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years in the 2011 killing.

It’s a case where many felt family influence and clout would prevail. Police were accused of fumbling the high-profile case and now there is an appeal. Bob McKeown investigates a tangled family tale that ended in murder – with many questions still unanswered.

  1. His uncontrolable sobbing was the dead giver away for me!!!! He thought he could jail break from his father's jail, instead ended up in public jail! At least, he should be happy because he is now debt free and is fed by the rest of us tax payers!!!! If I was him, I would spend the rest of the sentence in jail, what's the point in coming out to the society?

  2. Update: Wikipedia: "His lawyers immediately began the appeals process, seeking the appellate judges to either overturn the guilty verdict, order a new trial, or enter a full acquittal.[10] The appeal was successful, and Dennis' conviction was overturned on October 24, 2016. On July 19, 2019, he was found not guilty on retrial.[11]"

  3. These shows and the behavior of people know whose parents have money make me so grateful my parents were poor.

  4. Wow. Expert crime scene investigators should be on the scene as soon as possible. No matter where it happens in Canada. Especially for such a brutal crime and high profile crime. Apparently it wasn’t done in this case. It’s really unbelievable

  5. It’s not about whether he did it or not at this point, they didn’t prove beyond a reasonable doubt. The evidence was handled horribly. That’s not justice.

  6. Come on people that is completely insane so to get a warrant for a jacket that you know they are going to test anyway you are requesting that they get another warrant to do DNA testing,
Even listening to his attorney you can tell his attorney knows this guy did it

  7. Does anyone know the extent to which the phone was searched for? Did they have dive teams? Did they have metal detectors? Did they have dogs tracking a scent?

  8. In Greek mythological parlance, Kronus was just about to eat his child, when the kid jumped out of his father's jaws, bashed him several times in the head and fled.

  9. I’m sure there’s a huge division bc of this trial. For one when authorities aren’t smart enough to keep the crime scene untainted there’s a huge issue. Also they never investigated any other possible suspect. They picked the son and looked no where else. The judge also influenced the outcome which is unacceptable. The way this was handled, if he did it or not should have had it thrown out.
