That’s insane, how long are gonna give this unit a chance before they realise it’s not gonna work. That first unit has been so damn predictable every pp. put Laine in there at least!!
Edit: as for Hutson, I don’t mind letting him earn his spot on the first unit.
Bohmer
Next season Demidov is on PP2 and suddenly we have to very decent PP units!
chantal_990
Suzuki – Slafkovsky – Caufield – Demidov – Hutson
throw_me_away3478
Roy + Laine going to be nutty
FlowShredder
in Laine’s amazing years in Winnipeg, half of his goals came from the powerplay, I hope they try him on the first unit.
ColeFleur
I love this to be honest. Having two competing PP’s will be good. As long as one of them is clicking hopefully. It will be a great sign for this team moving forward if that 2nd unit can out produce the 1st one.
Subject_Translator71
I would replace Dach with Hutson. This unit needs another playmaker.
mdlt97
i dont know about that
Habsfan_1984
Puck movement on the PP needs to be quicker, need to work it down low more, create space for cross seam passes. I respect not handing Hutson PP1 but if we’re struggling 10 games in I’d switch him and Matheson up.
Beefiest_bison
If they’re gonna run two units, I’d rather keep Dach with Laine.
Tony_car
Ça va être comme ça pour le début de la saison c’est sur mais j espère qu’il essaie Hutson sur la 1 avec le premier trio et dach dans les match de presaison restant
MetalFungus420
PP2 has no center? If they won’t win the face-off, that’s at least 30-45 seconds knocked off the PP
Cole-Caufield-22
Joshua time let’s gooo
Longtimelurker2575
Would personally switch Dach/Laine but they probably want Caufield and Laine in the same role. Either way I like it!
elisamaldy
Gonna be interesting to see Slaf as a bumper. Not where I imagined him but maybe it will work.
realm_fury
Hutson to PP1 please.
OnlineEgg
basically the same as last season except dach plays the bumper spot like where monahan played? it’s not bad to start the season since these guys are comfortable w eachother, but i wonder how PP1 will look around january if it’s not much better. maybe switch laine for caufield? hutson on pp1? just speculating
Spotlightss
Remove gallagher…the guys have 79 point on pp his whole career doesn’t belong there at all
dawnofthedunk_
Laine on PP2 is gross mismanagement.
coincidencecontrol
Hmm, im fine with laine on the 2nd line but I feel like you have to put him on pp unit 1
BigBoy990
Was really hoping Matheson would get traded before the season so we wouldn’t have to put up with this charade where everyone knows Hutson is the best option but we have to “ReSpEcT tHe VeTeRan”
I know some people are saying Hutson will show he is the best option with his play on the 2nd wave but I think that’s bullshit cause realistically that unit is gonna get like 30 seconds of powerplay. I missed zone entry by Newhook like we saw so often last season and its back to 5-on-5.
HurinGaldorson
Genuine question: why is Gallagher on the PP? What I mean is, what exactly does he bring, and isn’t there anyone else who is better at bringing it?
HabbyKoivu
why not Hutson with Matheson? That 2nd PP unit is ripe for SHGA lol.
KoreanPhones
Lol this will change quick.
greasydrg
This honestly sucks for anyone who took Habs players in fantasy. Looks like they may spread the PP time around this year
SkuL23
Its okay to test 2 waves but u feel like double Lane and Laine will end up on the first pp in a close future
TonyComputer1
Definitely good to have two equal powerplay units.
MainHaze
I actually love it! Instead of just straight up giving them a spot on PP1, this is pretty much a “show-me-what-you-got” challenge from St Louis to both Laine and Hutson.
I’m very interested to see how they respond!!
puls3r
Gallagher? Wtf
john4845
Laine is by far the best PP player on the team. Won’t be long before that he is either on the #1 unit, or whatever he is on, becomes the #1 unit
EVERY top PP team in the league runs a clear #1 unit, with 2-3 guys getting 1:40+ of 2min powerplays on average.
If Montreal wants to have an elite PP, they need to put the best eggs into a single basket
Suzuki is great even strenght / shutting down opposing stars, but he is in no way a PP specialist.
Slaf was starting to have a somewhat solid left-handed one-timer last season, in addition to being pretty good at passing etc. IF he continues to develop in that role, Mtl might have a good left-handed PP player on the wall, à la Kucherov/Rantanen/Draisaitl.
Optimally the guy on the goal line should have different handedness vs the guy in the bumper = the goal line guy should be L. Suzuki is R, but he might be otherwise so much better than Newhook, that he will be the choice
I’d go with
————Suzuki/Newhook—- Laine —— Caufield —– Slaf ———Matheson—————
Matheson has been a somewhat dependable PP machine the previous seasons, so I’d give him the edge over Hutson at this point. But obviously the difference is so small that it might not be long before Hutson is on the #1 unit
Caufield should play as “the bumper” in the middle of the SH diamond/square, like Point/Oshie have done in their hayday. No need for a huge guy there.
The goal line guy will be on the goal line, if the puck is on Slaf, and then will go to get rebounds/deflections when the puck goes to Matheson/Laine for shooting.
An best option would obviously be if Suzuki was left-handed, then they could reverse-image the PP so that Caufield would go to the goal line on Laine’s side, and Suzuki would go to the bumber, to receive Caufield’s pass. But that takes serious skill & timing to work, and usually only the absolute best of the PP specialists can pull that off smoothly.

Everyone in the comments is a nhl power play coach apparently
zzzzoooo
I prefer to have Laine and Hutson on PP1, and Dach and Matheson on PP2
bathbwoi
Pp2 has potential to be dangerous and if they do they will get bumped up to pp1 can see Hutson potentially replace matheson mid season and Laine potentially replace Dach.
Also Hutson being on that pp2 will automatically make it more lethal
HotHuckleberry8904
PP2 could be as much of a threat as PP1. I like that potential for this year.
