Jack Johnson and The Cigarette Surfboard

Jack met The Ciggy Board Boys aka @thecigarettesurfboard at the International Marine Debris Conference in San Diego in 2018. Jack had heard of the project but when they mentioned they were working on a few more boards, he didn’t hesitate to invite them out to Hawai’i… fast forward a year, and those words became a reality.

Thousands of Cigarette Butts picked up off the beaches of California have turned into a few functional Cigarette Surfboards. An awesome conversation with Jack highlights the role we play as surfers (and non-surfers) to be better stewards of the sea.

Directed, Produced, Filmed, and Edited by Ben Judkins and Taylor Lane (aka Ciggy Board Boys)
Music by Jack Johnson “Staple It Together”
Additional Footage by Connor Trimble, Dan Lorch, KTLA 5 News, Sean Evans, Swan Dive Media

  1. Cigarette surfboards took you around the world? So you took a plane I imagine? Well, guess what: that sort of pollution is just as harmful to the ocean! Surfers keep finding new ways to make surfboard construction more sustainable, but that just takes focus away from the real problem: surfers keep taking planes to go around the world chasing great waves.
You wouldn't have enough of an entire life of cigarette butt picking to make up for the ecological damage caused by a trans-pacific flight.

  2. Jack Johnson is just one of those people who seems like he is always just happy and laid back. I would love to have the same mental health as Jack Johnson.

  3. I don’t smoke but I wonder is anyone working on a biodegradable cigarette filter??? People obv aren’t going to quit anytime soon but why not make biodegradable filters global law if it can be created (it might have been already, I don’t know?)

  4. I love it how Jack Johnson says ''Just because it's a heavy issue it doesn't have to be a drag'' and it's a surfboard made from cigarette buds
