Could Roof & Shade ever get added to Levi’s Stadium?

After soliciting the opinions of numerous architects and civil engineers, the 49ers found there is no reasonable way to provide shade for those who sit in the sunny seats on the east side of Levi’s Stadium.

“We can’t add shade,” team president Al Guido said on the 49ers Insider Podcast. “It’s not possible.”

The 49ers have investigated all solutions to provide relief from the heat at Levi’s Stadium, Guido said. But the design of the stadium, along with FAA regulations, makes all possible renovations or construction impractical.

“What I can tell the fans is we’re committed to making their experience as best as it possibly can,” Guido said. “We understand there might be a game or two early in the season that might be warm. We cannot add shade. We cannot build a roof.”

  1. Not much of a return of investment with building a roof. So i get it from the 9ers view. As a fan ya just have to adjust with the few games inconvenience. But definitely not possible to build something.

  2. A roof wouldn't provide much return for the niners, but as someone who's sat in that upper section, It would sure help for fans.

  3. I agree, lack of shade won't prevent fans from paying $500 and much more per seat so I doubt it would ever change. Maybe they can pass out visors and mini fans lol

  4. To your last point: if the Niners don’t see that thousands of fans are inconvenienced on the eastern side of the stadium and don’t recognize that as a problem then all they care about is money. Who as a fan wants to go watch their favorite team and be inconvenienced the entire game also knowing the team doesn’t care they’re inconvenienced? Especially with the problems of parking, high prices…

Prioritize fan experience imo and build some damn shade

  5. “It’s impractical/not possible” = We don’t want to pay for it but we’ll build it if Santa Clara residents pay for it and then charge more for those tickets as if we paid for it ourselves

Like FAA regulations really? There’s literally two high rises like a block away from the stadium

  6. Let's hope the shade never comes. Let 'em bake. Sincerely, Rams Fans. Worst of luck to you guys this year!

  8. I remember people kept saying that it wasn't structurally possible to build a roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium. Eventually, they got rain delays, forcing them to end the US Open on Monday year after year that they had no choice but to find a way. As you said, it wasn't just an inconvenience to fans but really became impractical.

  9. Insane to think that when I first saw the design and orientation of the stadium way back when my first thought was – those people on the east are going to fry in Sept – Oct – any yet nothing was done in the initial stages to mitigate from the very beginning…LOL

  10. One thing the 49ers have worked out with the NFL after their inaugural season is playing most of September on the road and having at least 1 night game. This season is not too fan friendly with the Patriots and Cardinals games at 1:05 early in the season.

  11. Just spitballing here as I’m no expert, but, if the stadium wasn’t engineered/built for the addition of a roof to begin with perhaps a roof couldn’t just “be added on.” Perhaps adding a roof would mean it would need to be freestanding (much like a canopy) rather than attached to the stadium structure.

  12. Man, it's such a bummer we didn't wait 5-10 more years to build the stadium after seeing what they've done in LA, Vegas, and ATL

  13. By far the best, most thorough analysis I've either seen or read. thank you

  14. Why not look into new solar technologies? Let the roof pay for itself, being solar it is non-reflective, and could produce enough energy to help the stadium become net zero carbon. Isn't this the goal of the environmental movement?

  15. Just bear in mind what happend with the Ballpark at Arlington. That venue was basically abandoned because of the sun. Granted it is a baseball stadium which hosts most games during the summer, alas in Texas, but I've been to that section of Levi's and it is a real problem.

  16. Hi Brodie at least you guys get dry heat. Here in Tampa we have heat and humidity. Gets better Nov and December. They try to do games at 4:30 . Still need the suntan lotion!

  17. If the fans of the Green Bay Packers have no problem going to games in sub-zero temperatures and fozen seats, why can't the 49er Faithfuls watch games at 100 degree heat?

  18. New rule: all VIPs and 49ers corporate execs must now sitin the east side with the peasants. They'll put in a roof real quick

  19. I bet they'd pretty quickly find a solution if people stopped buying tickets…I mean their solution would probably be begging taxpayers for more cash to build yet another cathedral to their ego.

  20. I wonder what TB John Lynch would tell GM John Lynch about the peasants in the sun and vise versa. Suffering is part of the experience right Bad Weather fans!

  21. I get that its hot but isn't this also an issue in places like Carolina, Jacksonville etc, where they deal with the sun AND the humidity?

  22. A bigger problem is that it's just not a great stadium anyway. Very barebones in pretty much every aspect. Like a college stadium
